Help on Peugeot XUD engine - noise?
Discussion
Hi all,
I have a low-mileage Pug 205 XUD with power steering. The 1.75l non-turbo.
There's what I can only describe as a very light ticking noise coming from the engine.
It's very quiet and comes from: hmm, if you're sat in the driving seat, just to the right of straight ahead, between the dash clocks and heater vent. The car looks like it's been really well looked after. I'm going to give it a service anyway, the oil looks a bit sooty, but that's pretty normal for diesels, isn't it?
Any idea what it might be? Something needing adjusting? It runs fine.

It might be a tappet that needs adjusting, it looks like that's a possibility according to the internet. I have a low-mileage Pug 205 XUD with power steering. The 1.75l non-turbo.

Does the rate of ticking increase with engine revs? If so, it could be engine-related. Is the sound audible when the car is stationary or only moving? If audible all the time, it's probably engine/clutch-related; if only when the car is moving then it's probably transmission-related.
This notwithstanding, it could be a few things - it could be a tappet, although the 1580cc XU5J petrol engine in my 309 (the engine yours is based on) is quite 'grizzly' on the overrun around town because of the noisy top end they often have anyway.
Or it could be the vacuum pump, or the PAS pump, or maybe something else. A curved ball might be the extra driveshaft joint on the offside driveshaft, but that's down near your feet and would be more of a 'grind' than a rattle.
It could be the speedo cable, if it only happens when the car is moving and the rate of ticking is related to the speed. Does the speedo needle leap about or is its action really smooth?
You could always get under there with a screwdriver as a 'stethoscope' and see if you can locate it
.
They're a good, tough engine (they sometimes have a midlife crisis at 50k miles and need a new head gasket, but this is all that generally goes wrong as long as they are serviced), so I'm sure your problem is an ancilliary
