While filling up today when out with my brother his filling up technique left me a bit baffled. He would fill up in 5 second squeezes. I asked him the logic behind this and his reply was " oh you get more petrol this way."
Have i missed the scam of the century here. This is a load of nonsense surely. Got me thinking what strange filling up habits do you have or whats the best filling up nonsense you have heard. (ie playing with your mobile confuses the dials on the pump)

I'm guessing he meant that you can fit more in the tank because it doesn't froth as much?

Still probably not true, but makes more sense than the other.

Anyone else feel that the price/amount starts going up before the fuel starts coming out of the nozzle?

That is the scam of the century!

Its ok cos it took him the same amount of time as it would to have filled it right to the brim.

Running a car that takes over 70 litres of derv to fill up, I am constantly pissed off with the non-thinkers who consider the commercial vehicle pump is a suitable place to park whilst 'popping in' to browse the service station shop for fags/sweets/crisps/papers or any other stuff they're too idiotic and disorganised to source at a cheaper outlet.

Some pumps have a curve in the pipe so it drops down before going up to the car.
I have been known to lift that curve up so the fuel in the pipe runs into my car.

I haven’t seen any pumps like that for a while though.

I like the people that lift the hose up so they try to empty the fuel out of the hose too laugh

Is it not obvious that the fuel stops in the handle. biggrin

I give it a good shake afterwards, I get another 80ml of petrol and I dont have any splashes on my paintwork.

I think pumps are a con as I regularly fill barrels and petrol cans that have marked volumes in the plastic and they are always short, annoys me a bit paying near 10er for 5litres of petrol when I am clearly standing with a 5litre container that seems to hold near 7litres frown

It is true with some diesel pumps. Never seen petrol frothing...

There is a theory behind this - If you only put in half a tank then car is lighter, thus using less fuel
My sister-in-law does it

The greatest bafflement to me is people who don't seem to have worked out that the refuelling hoses are long enough to stretch round to the other side of the car if there isn't a pump free on the filler cap side. I know some people think it can scratch the paintwork, but I've never seen any evidence of this when done carefully and it's not as if the average A-to-B car is in concourse condition anyway.

Excellent. First accidental laugh of the day, had to pretend I'd recalled a joke...
