Having a problem with Mrs. Hetfields car. It's a 2002 Gen 7 Celica, 1.8 VVTi, 140 BHP.

I put a new clutch in it for her at the weekend, working perfect but...

The EML is now on. Diagnostic scan revealed idle air control malfunction. To me, that suggested a problem with a vacuum pipe and sure enough, there was one missing from the back of the airbox. I hooked it back up but the fault still remains. I have tried clearing the code using an Autel EU-702 scanner using both Toyota and OBD2 modes but the code remains so obviously the problem still exists. If I disconnect the battery, it clears the code but as soon as I start the car and touch the throttle, the light comes back on.

I spoke to someone in Toyota and they suggested it could be an AFM issue but IMO, if it was an AFM issue then an AFM code would come up in the scan. I don't fancy splashing out £120 on a new one if that isn't the problem.

So, can anyone shed any light on the situation?

Can't shed any light on this situation in any way apart from recommend posting this on the Celica-Club forum. Helpful bunch over there.

Where abouts are you based? I'm in the leicester area and if you're nearby we could meet up and swop sensors to see if that helps. I replaced mine 2 years ago ( similar fault by the sounds of it). But before paying £117 I removed the old one and cleaned it with brake cleaner. It was good for about a month only tho. Moisture had rusted the tiny spring and it had stopped ' flexing' so it wasn't reading the air flow correctly.
