guys, never read the manual but sometimes when going on the Mway with the Cayenne in the middle air setting, it lowers itself to the lower setting (and then changes back to middle when i slow down)

sometimes it doesnt do this !

any ideas ?

It is meant to lower at speed on motorways. It's in the manual somewhere.

As per Manual:

Low level:

This level is intended for high-speed driving. Above
speeds of around 78 mph (125 km/h), the car is
automatically lowered by around 1 in. (24 mm)
(Cayenne, Cayenne S, Cayenne S Transsyberia) or
0.4 in. (9 mm) (Cayenne GTS) compared to
normal level.
When the speed drops to below around 25 mph
(40 km/h), the car is automatically raised to
normal level.

Note:

If low level was set manually with the rocker switch
in the center console, low level also remains
active at speeds below around 25 mph (40 km/h).

Automatic changes from normal level to low level
and back are not indicated on the multi-purpose
display of the instrument panel.

I'm disappointed. For some reason in my mind I added the word 'taking' after cayenne and before air!

Dont remember the exact specs now, but at around 120mph it then drops to a "non selectable" level between Low Level II and Loading Level to improve high speed stability...

You should check that it is doing what it should do consistently - perhaps the times where it has not lowered are occasions when you have not reached the speed which trigggers the release of air back to the reservoir. If you are exceeding the trigger speed and it's not lowering then your ECM may have a fault.

I'm not sure if Cayennes have the same sort of issues as some other cars with air suspension, all I would say is that I'd be very wary of any car older than 4 years or with more than 100k miles that has this sort of suspension.

I recently sold an X5 4.8iS with height adjustable air suspension. It had driven from Aberdeen to the Yorkshire BMW dealer I got it from, then to me (500 miles total), a customer bought it and drove it 100 miles home and then it developed a fault where the front would drop sometimes (really annoying for me, and him of course, that it only occurred the day he bought it), but over the next 2/3 days sometimes it behaved itself perfectly.

Anyway, it was diagnosed as a fault with 2 sensors at the front - a £200 repair, job done. So it's worth getting it plugged in to see what faults may be stored.

I dream of 80 mpg, although I am encouraged (if that is the right word) that I am not alone in scoring 16 mpg.

Not good but nice to know.
