On my way to work this morning saw one of those Mazda 121's - pretty much a Ford Fiesta

It got me thinking what else is out there...

How similar or different do they need to be?

For example an Aston DB7 is built on a Jaguar XJ-S platform, but is it the same car?

Whereas a Santana PS10 looks very Defender like, but uses a different engine and completely different suspension.

Probe - MX-6
Focus - Mazda 3
Jaguar S-Type - Jaguar XF
Jaguar S-Type - Lincoln LS/Ford T-Bird
LR Discovery - Honda Crossroad
Rover 800 - Honda Legend
BMW 3 Series Compact - BMW Z3
Chrysler Crossfire - Merc SLK
Mini - Riley Elf
Fiat 500 - Ford KA Mk2
Mondeo - Contour
Every VW with every Audi with every Skoda with every SEAT

That's not quite fair though is it.

If you're doing that, it should be the below as they share the same platform:

Golf MK4 / A3 8L / Skoda / Seat / TT

There's a big difference between basic platform sharing and actually selling the same car with two different names, although obviously there's something of a continuum between the two.

Lancia Delta & Ypsilon's are badged as Chryslers here.
Vauxhall Astra is badged all manner of things all over the world, I believe. (Holden, Opel, Saturn)
Toyota Yaris is a Vitz in Japan also the Honda Jazz is known as the Fit.
Toyota Aygo is a Citroen C1 and Peugeot 107.
Toyota Altezza became the Lexus IS, the Toyota Aristo became the Lexus GS.
In the USA a Mazda 6 MPS is known as a MazdaSpeed 6 and the 3 MPS a MazdaSpeed 3.
The Nissan Micra is known as the March in Asia.
Old Volkswagen Bora's and Vento's were still known as Jetta's in the US.

This is from memory, I'm sure there are hundreds more.
