Just had an automatic renewal though for insurance on my truck of £400 with a well known broker and site sponsor.

Called them and said that seeing as the truck was off the road and sorned, I only needed storage cover so basically fire & theft with a zero mile usage.

Bloke: "Certainly Sir, that will be £320 yikes

Me: "WTF mate, why so high? It's in a locked garage separate to the house so unless it spontaneously combusts with the battery disconnected and a virtually empty tank, where's the risk?"

Bloke: "Ah, well yes but it's the value of the vehicle"

Me: "OK, I'll put it back on the road, give me a quote for 3rd party only"

Bloke: £380

Me: "WTF (again)"

Bloke: "It's the value of the vehichle"

Me: "No, with 3rd party only, the risk of the value, if it's stolen or if it burns is mine alone, your risk is what I hit which is the difference between your storage quote and your fully comp quote, i.e. £80"

Bloke: "Er, um, er, yeah, computer says no etc."

Ok, I can see the fully comp quote, it is what is is but the storage or 3rd party only quotes are a load of old wk.

If you would be happy with it being 3rd party only – why bother with insurance at all?

The £320 quote was for laid up cover.

I don't want 3rd party cover, I just wanted to see what the difference was between laid up and fully comp.
