I've come to the conclusion that the Yokohama's are not best suited to Me or my M400,

They are a very grippy but I think the side walls are too hard, the vibrations over bumps on road are bad and I can feel every small change in surface with them and the car has lost its nicely dampened smooth ride.

I could forgive this if they were perfect on track but they weren't, the nurburgring was so much more hard work than last year on road tyres, every small bump (lots at the ring) would try to pull the steering wheel out of my hands and straighten up mid corner, constantly fighting the steering wheel! I reduced pressures about 3 times to help but with no joy, then even on a smooth track like spa I still felt it. Horrible when trying to be smooth. Maybe just my set up camber wise but the road tyres were perfect. I will be trying 888's or Trofeo's next which hopefully have a bit more give in the side walls. I have no teeth left and I'm running 15psi and 22psi!

Can't wait to get the speedlines with my eagle f1's back on for the road!!

I would speak to Jetstream how they have set my car up what you have just mentioned I don't get any of that what you have just descibed, sounds like like what My Tuscan S was like which was exhilerating but like fighting a Bull Shark in the bath before Corsa's went on in 2003 with Nitron's etc.

Speedlines with Trofeo's on, now Corsa's are near exstinct & now are unavailable through distributers is what I'd recommend to anyone especially with mainly trackwork, the wheels you have on are fine too. I think Granty has sourced a supplier that does Trofeo's around £200 a set cheaper than what I paid last year. I'd too speak to Sumo in regards to 888's if they will be appropriate before you make the jump.

The only thing I'd like to do soon is get the existing stock dampers refurbed as for the on Ring is perfect set up. Spa/Silverstone still ok but my preferential personel set up will always be with the Ring in mind.

See ye soon. smile

I agree with shaun... the 048s are epic on my car with no loss in ride comfort or tramlining etc that you describe.

is it possible you have a different compound?

Jetstream set my car up and it handled great till I put these tyres on, rode perfect on rough roads and turned in great.

Never said anything about tram lining Andy. Its absolutely down to the mega stiff side walls making the front wheels jump around over bumps, I had the pressures down to 10psi front and 15psi rear and the tyre still feels hard on the road.

I guess it's possible I have a harder compound but don't they all have 3 layered side walls?

I use both AO48'S & R888's & no issues with either on track, if your in dry conditions take the pressures up 26 front & 29 rear when upto temp.
Just a thought what dampers are you using ?

Kev I'm on the standard M400 dynamics shocks. Ran 20 and 30 psi on road to Germany, when hot these went up to 30 and 40, the rear was overinflated as the centre wear is worse than edge then reduced hot temps to 20 and 30, then reduced hot temps to 16 and 24 and it didn't make any difference,

It feels like the front inside wheel is skipping over the bumps as I corner, but mid corner the steering wheel is fighting me and wants to straighten up. When I'm on road it's not as bad but I still get a judder through the wheel if Its a bumpy corner.

Are you sure your front dampers are ok ?

Hot tyre temp needs to be 20-26 on the front & 30 ish on the rear when upto temp on track.

Think they are fine, no signs of any leaks or anything but might send them off for a service anyway.

Admittedly A07s came with my M400 and are the only thing I've used with the Nob. Never considered them to produce rough ride, and still have all my teeth. Also never found them to want to follow every change in road surface, but I don't drive as close to the edge as you do (not yet anyway), Graham.

My Nob has it's original dampers. Suppose that might be a factor.

Others have complained that the AO7 lose their grip too quickly with heat cycles. My original set are beyond used up, and far from as grippy as when they were new. On cold days, power oversteer is a easy to produce in 2nd and 3rd, but never out of control. What I've noticed about the AO7s is that I feel them slipping, but hardly ever hear them squeel. The only times I've ever heard them is when I intentionally locked them up with a heavy right foot, or when I get the car seriously sideways at the track. The feedback and controlability of the M400 still gives me thrills.

The hard ride could be bearable if it was fine on track.

Kev, Andy, my car is a M400 and has the anti roll bar... I believe neither of yours have it. Could it be causing the inside wheel to lift when I'm on the power? I've looked at a few corner photos and on the exits of the corner under power it looks like my inside wheel is very close to lifting.

Cheers

Graham - what you describe does not sound good, but I would be surprised if it was being caused by the 048 sidewalls being significantly harder than for Corsas/Trofeos or 888s; all these low profile track tyres have bloody stiff side walls. As well as checking all steering/suspension components, I would be inclined to re-check your steering geometry. It maybe that something (pothole, whatever) has thrown the geo out of true and you're now running with eg toe-in rather than toe-out at the front on one side of the car. This would certainly give the symptoms you described. As others have said, they use or have used Yokos with no issues.
I run standard M400 shocks (originals) with the ARB and have just been to Dave to get my geo re-done. Three track-days in Iberia saw me scrub off the outside edge of my nearside front and rear, when tyre temp and pressures were all correct. At Spa I had to tip-toe round Les Combes at about 50mph as at any higher speeds the front would grip but the rear wouldn't and sliding across the apron back onto the track became a bit tedious! As well as a new upper ball joint on the nearside front, I now have 2 degrees negative camber at the front (with 1mm toe-out either side) and 3 degrees camber (plus 3mm toe-in each wheel)at the rear. Sounds a bit extreme for one of the old, slow, unmodded cars, but the tyre wear patterns were pretty convincing. I'll see how this fares at Donny next Friday and let you know if it's any better.
Hope you get it sorted as there is nowt worse than not having the confidence to chuck the car into corners.

Once a week isn't any good...
Not very scientific but perhaps might be worth trying the proven 'Hudson /Weymouth/Smith 2000 Method' Minimum 3 a week not including chinky buffets. Allways with chips conforming to the '5 a day' thingy.
We don't seem to get any handling issues yet still kinda fast... smile

My car is in getting the water injection kit and carbon dash fitted just now, asked the garage to check ball joints etc as per Robs recommendation and it turns out my front left wheel bearing is fked. It was only fitted in January so it'll get sent back for inspection.

Hopefully that sorts my dodgey handling! smile

Oh just got an email from Chris at speedline, the first batch are ready to be sent out! biggrin

Graham - hope that sorts your steering issue. No point in having one of the best handling sports cars if it dosn't ...err handle properly.
Are you going to inject just water in your new system or a water/methanol mix?

On advice taken from Mr Sumo I'll be using a mix of about 10% meth 90% water. From what I gather the meth reduces surface tension, helping the mix to be a mist rather than droplets.

Sounds good Graham, hopefully that'll sort the wayward handling. I'm still up for your original dash panel when available.

sounds to me like you have a dodgy front damper, really fooks up the steering over bumps...
