weighing up which one i would prefer insurance wise the 911 is £500 cheaper but 5 years older for roughly the same price as a m3.

I am 28 currently 4 day weekly commute of 10 miles per day.

Performance wise i would think in real world times they would be roughly the same. I am however pulling more towards the Porsche just for the styling of it as i would want one with the gt3 bodykit.

996 is surprisingly quick, only weighs 1320kg vs M3 at coniderably more. I'm a fan of em.

E46 has 4 seats and a good boot. I was surprised by the high-ish running costs, and decent ones are few and far between now.

Had i known what i now know 3 years ago, i'd have opted for a porsche over the BMW.

M3's are quick, but in the real world you have to ring the gnadgers off of them to keep them quick. servicing is high, insurance is high, depreciation is high.

never owned a porsche, but the downsides i see are image and lack of discretion...and finding a good one with the GT3 kit will be hard at M3 money.

I know 911's still have a certain reputation as a yuppie mobill. But it is also regarded as a supercar by most of Jo Public. Sadly they are common, but they still look the business IMO. The BMW sounds good, is fast and looks ok, but for me it's a no brainer - 996 everytime out of these two.

i had a nice estoril blue e46 m3 and traded in for a 997 c2s a couple of years ago.I regret it, the running cost of the porsche are going to be far higher, the m3 is not so bad at all.Find a nice m3!

IMPO i think the m3 will hold its value better than the 996 at the present time

One of those is a sports car. The other is a warmed-over exec saloon.

Not sure about that, 996 seem to have bottomed out now. Not saying they will go up, but the E46 M3s are still dropping.

quite a difference of opinions

As for running costs this not a problem as the mileage i do is currently 5k per year.

Is the porsche that much better of a drive than the m3. I am yet to sample a test drive in porsche 911 however i have drove a 07 Boxster of a friend and a e46 m3 convertible.

IMHO yes it is a mjuch better drive-if you want to be engaged.

The M3 (yes I had one) is good and fast but easy to drive and not really that much fun after a while.

The 996 will put a smile on your face everytime you fire it up.

don't be silly mate, go and research the S54 engine before you come up with ill-informed contentious opinions like that.

Sports cars are not just about engines.

Ive had both and prefered the Porsche. Maybe its because the m3 was an SMG one but it always seemed to be trying to egg you on to drive faster, which is great when you are in the mood but not so great when you are pootling to the pub. Porsche was happy at any speed and has much more of a dual personality.

The Porsche is quieter and doesn't percievably feel quite as quick, but I'd imagine there is not much in it.

I felt that both cars need to be moving fairly quickly to become fun to drive, if I was in the market again for that type of car then I'd be looking at a Boxster S (3.4 if poss). If space is a major issue then obviously the m3 is the more practical of all.

Anyone who defines a sports car as being simply a function of the engine has little grasp of what a 'sports car' is, IMHO.

I have an E46 M3 that i use daily & it's fantastic. I can leave it parked anywhere and doesn't really attract that may looks due to the fact it looks like (and is really) just a two door BMW. I like the practicality of it - big boot, lots of room inside and space for 4 adults, which all are required for me. Having said all that if i didn't need that space i would be in a 996.

I've been disappointed with both the E46 M3 and E39 M5 I will definitely be in the 911 market next, personally.

I can't comment on the 996 as I've never driven one, but have you ever driven an E46 M3?

why was the M3 produced en masse in the first place? I was using the engine as an example, it's not a 'warmed' anything, it's a re-engineered version of an executive saloon.

Most of the body panels are different, it has a pretty good lsd and the track is widened from a standard 3 series.

it is not a 'sports car' per sae, my argument was not with you stating it relative to a sports car, it was with your calling it a 'warmed' exec saloon.

can it cover ground round a track quicker than a 996? probably not, but it wouldn't be far off, so the initial assertion made was wrong. IMO.
