What (Family) Car?
Discussion
This will be my wife's car and the main family car, criteria as follows..
- 6/7 seats
- diesel
- able to tow 1500kg
- NOT another MPV (I know this discounts a huge number but after 5 years with the Alhambra we fancy a change)
- not French (wife's criteria and there's no movement on this)
- not hugely expensive to run (35+ mpg, sensible insurance etc..)
- able to take the abuse that 3 kids dish out for at least 4-5 years o ownership
My wife would love an XC90 but they seem expensive to run. Any experiences?
Budget is £10k including the part ex. of the Alhambra.
Thanks for reading.

Seven seat (two in boot) Mercedes E-Class Estate (320 CDi)? or
Seven seat (two in boot) Audi A6 Avant (3.0 TDi)?
Oops sorry should have said no estates with 2 seats in boot. Wife has safety issues with this. Yes I know its not logical but you know how 'they' are and she will be driving it most of the time.Seven seat (two in boot) Audi A6 Avant (3.0 TDi)?

GG - do a search as there was a thread recently entitled '7 seats without looking like a tosser' or something like that.
Consensus was something like a Disco or the S-Max (an MPV I know, but a small, fairly sporting one).
Must have missed that, great title Consensus was something like a Disco or the S-Max (an MPV I know, but a small, fairly sporting one).

Thought about S Max, its on the reserve list. Would like leather and thats quite rare in the S max.

Think you'll have to get an XC90!

just to update if anyone is interested. Just put a deposit on an 06 XC90 from local independent dealer.
Photo from advert.

Its going for a little paintwork tomorrow then will be MOT'd, needs 2 x tyres, so hopefully pick it up next weekend.
Decided to up the budget a little to get the 185bhp engine with the 6 speed auto.
very impressed on test drive.
Its another £89 on insurance (just renewed) and Band L for road tax!
Wife's happy with it and kids loved it so all is well.

How much did you pay if you don't mind me asking? Am interested in these myself as a rugged baby-carrier.
From what I have read post-06 versions should have all the AWD and electrical issues sorted.
Just under £11k minus my part ex.From what I have read post-06 versions should have all the AWD and electrical issues sorted.
There were cheaper ones but they were minimum 70 miles away. This was only 6 miles from home.
I think they did have issues on earlier ones but may have sorted them when introducing the 185bhp engine and 6 speed auto.
We'll have to see how it gets on.
I've heard that when towing (we have a caravan) the gearbox oil can overheat. This can be fixed by adding another module to the gearbox oil cooler.

This is exactly why I limited the amount of kids we had
I've got 3 but we take either my parents or my M in L on holiday/days out quite often so need the 7 seats. Also with needing to tow a 1500kg caravan its best to go big!
It will be my wifes car and I have an E36 318is as a more normal sized car.
