Hi,
Im looking to get myself a GT 3.2 to use as a weekend run around.
Ive been checking autotrader and seeing some real good looking bargains 5-7 years old with 30-60,000 on the clock for around 5-6 grand.

Are there any things i should look out for or avoid like the plague when buying?
Is there a reason a lot of them are being sold not long after the 55K cambelt change?
Im a complete novice where alphas are concerned so any advice is gold

Hi Gazmo999

I have had a GT 3.2 V6 as a daily driver for the past year now. It has been a fantastic car to own. Here is a good buyers guide for the 147 GTA, most of the suff on there pretty much applies to the GT 3.2. http://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/alfa-gta/89970-156-...

As long as the cambelt is done and the car has a good service history it should be fine. Fuel wise you get around 20mpg. Road tax is £460 for 12 months unless its pre 06, then its around £270 for 12 months. Insurance is group 19. Budget around £450 for tyres, and about £350 for servicing unless anything major needs done i.e. a new clutch, cambelt etc. MAF's tend to go and are quite expensive to replace at £260, so keep some money aside for this.

Apart from that they are fantastic cars to drive, comfortable on long journeys and accelerate pretty well.

If there's anything more specific you would like to know, I'll try my best to help.

Our GT is a daily driver. Diff upgrade is a must. Highly recomend Autolusso in Beds as the premier place to look after it.

They'll do you a Quaiffe TorSen diff & know them inside outsmile

Are you sure the cam belt has been done on these cars or is it overdue?... Check carefully!

To add to this I would ensure the clutch isn't overly heavy or slipping as it's a labour intensive job. Listen for creaks from the front suspension and a knock which will be the anti roll bar bushes - not expensive repairs but if they all need doing it adds up. Personally I would avoid cars with larger wheels than the standard 17"s - the larger wheels increase the already high road noise, have a tendency to wear quicker and tramline. Also listen out for a creaky taigate on early cars, make sure the rear foglamp/reverse lamp isn't full of water and check the heated seats work if it has them. The nav system is a waste of time so don't get hung up over finding one, Q2 is a worthwhile option albeit not a factory fit one and a nice sports exhaust finishes them off. Also make sure the door handles aren't broken as they are often on back order from Alfa.

Great value cars at the moment, the 06 tax break came in on the 23rd March so some 06/06 cars qualify for the cheaper rate.

Indeed I would hazard a guess there is a stamp for the service but no bill! They should be done 3 years/60,000 miles and expect not a lot of change from £500 for the belts and tensioners to be done.
