Sorry to post this up but saw this I a recent Autocar. Now I pretty much like the Cee'd 7 year warranty etc comfy seat lots of kit.

However I'm sorry but this price is crazy

Or is this the impact of QE???
Give me a three year old 330d plus a CTR for the same thank you very much.

A VW Golf in "Match" spec (which is basically SE with some other niceties) is just under £20k in 1.6 TDI flavour.

An Astra in SE spec with a 1.7 diesel is £21.5k.

A Focus 1.6 TDCi Titanium is just over £20k.

The lowest-spec Honda Civic with a diesel engine is over £20k as well, as is the BMW 116d ES.

Why wouldn't the highest-spec Ceed with a better warranty and probably a load more kit than any of those not also list at the same kind of price? They're arguably a mainstream brand these days, and charging mainstream prices for their stuff.

a guy at work has that stupid big mouthed faux suv, he paid 21k for it.. 21 for me would be on a porsche 911 turbo...(i know it is not a proper comparison but it just feels really stupid to waste money on a white goods)

You can get a skoda fabia vrs for about 5-6k less than that..

The list price is so high to make it look like you got a good deal when the salesman offers £3k off just for walking into the showroom.

Wouldn't know I would imagine more around the 22,000 mark. The basic one lists at £23,295 and has a whatcar target price of £21,076 imagine with the metalic paint and the sav nav would still push it to over 22k even with money off madness really but it is a nice car and fully loaded for that money being a titanium x. He had a mondeo that did 120k miles trouble free in a 3 years hence him going for a Ford again.

New car prices are way high, although you never really pay list. Skoda were selling Fabias and Octavias last year for 20% off list. An Octavia vRS came in at about £16k when a Golf GTI (with lower spec and little discount offered) would set you back £24k.

Exactly you'd need 9,000 reasons to want the Golf over the Octavia.

I was in 100% agreement before you started comparing it to used cars. Give me a used Ferarri 348 and a Kia Ceed for the price of a new 330d..

New car prices have gone potty in the last couple of years. I remember right here on pistonheads about 3 years ago when the Focus RS came out everyone was saying how it was far too expensive even for the hot hatch daddy. Now 25k only buys you an entry level hot hatch!

I do wonder if RRPs are completely pointless. Has anyone ever paid £25k for a focus diesel, or is it a pointless made up list price to give the impression that lease deals and discounts are better than they are?

There must be a bit of "DFS" syndrome where the headline price is huge to make the deal look better. The cheap lease deals on BMW 640ds suggest that the £67k list price on those is way over the top.

Out of interest how much discount is possible on something like a new 911S? That's now an 80k car but the 911 has a huge margin on it (I believe it's the most profitable mainstream car on sale).

I think you're right.. There is a bit of DFS syndrome....

My problem will always be... I look at a new base model Focus, and think how much is that worth?? How much would I pay? For a brand new one.... I'd stand there looking at it and do a sum in my head that says maybe £10k max...

Hence I will never be able to buy a new car.... For the life of me I can't see why they cost so much, and are worth so much less 18 months down the line...... Why would any sane person give £10k away just like that??

But list price dictates the BIK tax for co car drivers. Discount is irrelevant your taxed on its list price even if your company was given it free...

Do people buy these cars new privately? Surely they are all motability or co cars or cars which the manufacturer allowed staff to buy and run for a few months then sell it back.

After myself now buying a SEAT and a couple of guys buying Skoda's in work, I can't see why I'd buy a VW anymore. I know some people prefer the nicer interior, but still, that amount of money can't make me want a better interior that much!

I also know that with the Vauxhall's especially, you can walk in and they'll deal at 3.5k less than list price off the bat without much effort. Their depreciation is horrific as well.

Not forgetting the residuals of course which makes the Golf a more attractive option for some.
I wouldn't touch one myself but it is a serious contender as middle England's choice

Exactly - Can you imagine how hacked off you'd be when you saw the P11D for a Focus Titanium?

Taking opt out money looks increasingly attractive these days.

Not convinced that a 25k Golf will ever give better residuals than a 16k Octavia. hehe

Mind you, I doubt people pay list for the Golf, either.
