I have a terrible gag reflex, that is a pain sometimes. Can be brought on by a number of things, using the toothbrush for too long, nervousness, having something put in my mouth that isn't 'normal' (like the dentist trying to take an x-ray etc....)
Whilst it's not a major problem, it is a bit annoying, does anyone know of anything that might help ?

When you ask on PH about how to stop gagging when you put things in your mouth the temptation is too great!
But I wont. I don't know what will help other than to say I have the same issue, not quite as extreme but certainly brushing teeth too long or nervousness causes it. I think the nervouness part is down to anxiety and probably isn't releated but I don't know. Have you spoken to your GP about it? I havent.

Try breathing deeply (through your nose, obviously) but be careful not to breath down what is in your mouth (eg toothpaste). Also if you feel it, try to bend your head (or at least fold your neck if you can't move ie x-rays) forwards - if you tip your head back you can feel that part of the neck close more which results in a higher likelihood of "gagging".
