if you phone up the insurance company they may insure your old /new car on a temporary insurance say for a weekend or so.I have done this before when going to view a vehicle over the weekend.I insured it before a viewing on a temporary basis incase the car was a basket case i could cancel it.

OK..but what about the SORN and DVLA fine bit? I coule be 3-4 weeks with no car.
Don't SORN the car, speak to ins company & ask how much it will cost to cover both cars for a month.

Welcome to the horrid world of buying and selling privately. I've saved a packet doing this, but I sometimes wonder if its really worth it.

Not only do I have your above scenario, which was since made worse by the stupid DVLA rule meaning I have to sorn it (you have about 3-4 weeks grace period, it seems) but I also have to put up with idiotic, time wasting buyers and sellers. Starting to wonder if its worth it...

Anyway, to answer your question - my insurer offered me a 30 day 'overlap' whereby I had both my new and old cars insured for a minimal fee.
