Hi,

I would like to know how much an ST2/3 cost to fill up from empty, preferably the good stuff;)

How many miles do you get from a full tank of fuel and what's the real world mpg.

I drive 8 miles to and from work each day round trip, mainly country lane, 1/2 mile dual carriageway, can someone give me some advice on what sort of mileage I would get from this trip in a focus ST.

Asking as I'm thinking of upgrading my current focus for an ST in about 6-10 months time.

Been a while since ive filled it from near empty but using tesco super its about £70.

Ive averaged 21.1mpg over this tank and thats on a much shorter urban commute.

My RS does c.300 mile to an £80 - ST should be a little better in reality.

Just had an economy hike to 26 mpg from 24.5. Must try harder............. Better than my mates RX8 at 21 mpg, so feel better for that............

Thanks for the replies so far.

As I have said really I am concerned about the cost of running an ST as admitably I dont have the best payed job and have recently moved out so dont want to be crippling myself.

I know i will not being buying one for the fuel economy, so im trying not to get hung up that much on it, but whats the point in owning one if I cant afford to run it! biggrin

If you're worried about the cost of an 8 mile commute in an ST mate it's probably not the car for you!

Insurance can be expensive,for me its £550 at 30+

Then the fuel,if i put about £75 to fill up i get about 250 miles to a tank but then thats not long distance cruising speeds.Normally i do £100 to £140 a month on fuel doing a distance similar to what you say.

I would say mine costs about £2500 a year to run if i do not have to replace any other parts like brakes etc.

Don't know what tyres you are using, but a pair of Good Year Assymetrics just cost me £260 fitted last week. You could put Falken 452's on there which people recommend ( although I didnt get on with them) for £200.
Servicing depends on mileage, but the plugs are once every 4 yrs on average I believe, so general servicing is on par with other cars.Luckily my mate is vat registered and I supply the oil, so £50 oil, £50 labour to do and stamp the book.
Fuel economy in every car is how you drive, regardless. I have known diesels to do mid 20's on a spirited run.
Replaced the discs and pads for under £200 uprated, which is good value when i did. Insurance for me with the Mountune is a lottery for your postcode, but I pay £290 and am 41yrs old.

If I bought a mondeo diesel, yes on a steady run, would get 50 mpg. Actually a friends Mondeo tyres are more expensive than the ST's. Servicing is relative. Roadtax, yes cheaper, but only £100 or so, so for a boring repmobile to a decent car is not that far apart.

I do about 8 miles a day, all around hilly town roads & get around 21mpg. Thats about 210 or so miles on a full tank, but then I only fill up once a month. I dont care about the MPG, I knew it was poor but its the car I want.

I bought 4 tyres on 10th May '11 & they were £440 so not that expensive, they are standard size Uniroyal RainSport 2. Done nearly 3k miles on them and they are realy good in the dry and the wet.

Servicing is no more than a normal Focus, 2nd service inc brake fluid was £186, 3rd service was £276 inc spark plugs & 4th was £143 as that a normal one.

Insurance is £553 for me, 26 y.o with 0 points/ claims/ accidents & 8 year NCB.

Michelins are expensive. Mate has just bought 4 for his RS at just under a grand !!!

Conti Sport Contact 3s are about 260 - 270 a pair as well.
As for insurance, I'd be as happy as a dog with two dicks if I was paying £450. Beirut postcode means double that frown

I'll have quick gander at what I've spent later when near the big pile of bills.

Right - A quick rough and ready reckoning (over 105k):

Tyres - 18 at a total cost of £2,340. Last couple cost £275 a pair. However, will need another 4 soon.

Servicing/repairs - £3,250 total. That does include £600 for suspension work, £350+ for new radiator and £170 for an alloy. Remainder is servicing & brake pads/discs (which I'm very easy on). Minor service @ 145-150, major one @ 240-250.
Will need more pads, discs, a repair, a service and a cambelt change in next 12 months, so a fair bit of expense to come.

Insurance - Dependant on so many factors, but a rough guess would be @ £4.5k in total.

Fuel - I thing I've probably averaged about 25mpg in a mix of conditions etc. No idea what average price per litre is over last 5 years but if I assume £1.15 per litre, that's £22k on fuel.


Add in a couple of MOTs and a grand's worth of tax & the total is around £33k before depreciation over 5 1/2 years. Add in depreciation of something around £13.5k and I make that a cost of just short of £8.5k per year, or £4.4k per 10,000 miles.


OP - If you're really short of cash and/or don't have that well paid a job, do you really want to commit yourself to this? If I were you, I'd save for a while and wait for fuel heavy cars like the ST to suffer even more in the used market.

Decided to leave things for 6 months, see where I am financially and take things from there.

I've just filled mine up at the local shell garage today, on board comp said 68 miles to empty & took £57 to fill up - that's on standard UL not vpower though.

My commute is 18-20 miles per day round trip and averaging 25+, the trip is all urban with a couple of miles of 45ish A road.

Always fancied one of these but put off by the fuel consumption. Why are these cars, and other 5 cylinder turbos so thirsty? Having a turbo i thought they would be a bit more efficient.

They seem to be equal to or worse even than an R32 with naturally aspirated v6 rolleyes

I did a steady cruise the other day and managed over 30 mpg. Not that bad. It is a big cc engine for the size of car. All depends on how you drive it.With the cost of fuel now, everyone is looking at better mpg cars. People with diesels getting 50 mpg...........but thats not what Pistonheads is about....... Thats What Car forums........
