This week, I found out that my MX5 will not pass its MOT without spending at least what the car is worth on it, so I've been forced to get rid of it frown And having had two MX5s now, I don't think I'll be getting another. Why? As good as the MX5s are, variety is, as they say, the spice of life.

The question is, what next? I'm planning on spending a maximum of £5K sometime in the next 6 months. It is just a toy, so fuel economy wont matter. I've also just got a new job with a significant pay rise, so I think as long as the insurance is less than £1K thats fine (I'm 33).

It must be a modern classic (so as to not suffer too much depreciation).

It must not be FWD - gay.

It must not be too ruinous to run or unreliable.

Nothing I've owned before.

So far I've owned a Fabia VRS, Mk2 Golf GTI, Clio 182, ITR, E36 BMW 328 Sport, Eunos RS Limited, MR2 Turbo, Primera GT.

I'm thinking of the following shortlist so far:-

Mk3 Toyota MR2 with either a 2ZZ or Camry V6 lump.

Honda S2000

Porsche 944 Turbo / S2

E36 BMW M3 Evo (not too sure about this as already had a 328 Sport).

E39 BMW M5

Mitsubishi Lancer Evo

Impreza STI

Something else?

For £5K? Really? Had no idea these were that cheap now.

I'll add a Z3M to my list too.

M BMW would have the potential to be ruinious in my book.

I'd be looking at the s2000 or maybe a boxter for that money.

Yep, just dropping down into the £5k bracket now! 280bhp from the ~03 ones so they go pretty well. Seriously interested in one as my next car. Needs the GT pack , though!

TVR Chimaera? Pro: Has V8. Con: probably too many to list, all insignificant compared to "pro" though.

No chance on the RX8. I think I'd prefer a RHD vehicle, too.

A Boxster could be a money pit just as much as an M BMW.

E36 M3 will probably be a bit "been there, done that" with your previous 328. They do have the capacity for big bills too, look at my profile for how much I've spent on mine in 2 months!

That Nissan looks lovely, "supercar" to the untrained eye.

My Chimaera.

I'm 27 and the insurance is just over 200 quid a year fully comp too!

On the ruinous and reliable fronts-

Ruinous...fuel aside (it is a 4.0 V8 after all) they are not expensive to run; all parts are off the shelf and they are as mechanically simple as can be! No fancies electrics or expensive parts!

Reliable...i'm into the second year of owning mine and it has NEVER let me down, i even used it daily for a couple of months. The only money i've spend beyond routine servicing is on a new battery, but the old one was 9 years old so can't grumble!

By a good one and Chimaera will be a very rewarding and enjoyable car!

Oh and nothing makes you smile like a TVR! I've owned a 944S2 and 6 pot E36's (not an M3 alas) and they don't come close!

Oh and people love TVRs, they are almost classless. An old Porsche or BMW has a stigma but TVRs don't seem to, people just smile when they see (well hear first) you coming!

If you could stretch your budget a little bit (I think to just over £6K) then you could get one of these:

It would have to live on the street, so no to one of those.
