Sticking thermostat?
If you don't have a spare, take the existing one out and run without one in, or take yours out and put it in boiling water and see if it opens.

No, you may have lost coolant while you have left it standing frown hence the overheating from airlocks or low coolant, fill and bleed the system then check again with a shakedown run while checking for leaks wink

Check it with the heater valve open so you don't air lock there.

When you run from cold, feel the top hose for hot water when the thermostat opens.

If you warm it staionary gently reving it, it doesnt take long to get up to temperature.

Of course you could have a blown head gasket paperbag.
