Can anyone tell me why old Nikon lenses have a metal 'gunsight' attached near the mount? Was it a machanical link to the body for metering info?

Yes, it harks back to the days of photomic heads for the F & F2. The slot couples with a pin in the head for metering. More info here:

(Actually the F2AS (1977) was the last good camera Nikon made along with the 55mm macro, it's been downhill ever since )
