This morning the sun was shining and I decided to take the Wedge out for a clean and just general inspection. I keep the Wedge in a row of garages behind some purpose built maisonettes one of which I own and rent out, but keep the garage to store my Wedge. It must have been 10.15am when I fired up the Wedge and brought the car back to my house. After a couple of hours I took it back to put it away and a lady came over and told me that I woke her up at 10.15 when she was having a lie in on a Sunday. I told her I did nothing wrong and that my car is legal and the exhaust is the standard one which passed the MOT. Anyway, to cut a long story short, after a long discussion I could see we weren't getting anywhere, so I just told her that I will use the car when needed. It's not as though I use it every day or even in the late or early hours. What is it with some people? Honestly? Has anyone else had such problems? this ones a new one on me!

buy some earplugs, put them in an envelope with a happy birthday card, deposit in her mailbox. smile

Cranky annoyed people exist anywhere, sadly. And they'll take any opportunity to complain about stuff!

Exactly the same position with my griff.

I took my Velocette round to see if they preferred that.

They didn't. wink

I can normally see why people complain but I don't think this is justified. Quarter past ten is fine on a Sunday. Was it your lodger or someone else?

No. It wasn't my lodger, just some fussy lady living in one of the flats near the garages, but I think she's got the message.

Hi,

Although I don't think 10:15am is at all unreasonable, whilst difficult it is probably best to try to keep things cordial.

The problem is it only takes her to complain to the police and they could slap a section 59 on the car and then that could cause difficulty.

I have a very noisy EVO5 which occasionally gets started early in the morning, with non car enthusiastic neighbours and although I have owned the car for 16 months, I am waiting for a knock on the door. Luckily if it one side I can counteract it with I will keep the car quiet if they can keep their kids from waking me up when I am trying to sleep during the day after a night shift.

Alternatively, you could get a couple of exhaust bungs off ebay.

Regards

Nick

Tony

When I had a similar problem with one of my neighbours the local council ruled that I could start the cars anytime after 9.00 am on a Sunday which was a result as I had made a personal time before that of 10 am hehe

Police what!!..I looked into this before i decided to "make some noise"..The police do not carry decibel meters for a start, They would also have to hire 50 metres of road and then test with the meter your car driving towards them and then away from them, They would also need a stationery reading on idle..It is however easier for them to retrieve information as regards to factory fitment of new cars as regards to DB, Legally you are allowed 1db over the factory setting..I own a 30 year old car that is hand built and it would be a bit more difficult to attain information as regards to classics and classic sports car db limits..Even more so a TVR..I have had police look round my car quite a few times and they love it, They even ask me to give it a rev..They nod with appreciation..I have yet to meet a miserable plod!..loud pipes saves lives and thats a fact..It could be worst..I could be a 20 year old with a 10" exhaust tailpipe on my corsa and a pumping 1000 watt stereo annoying the fk out of everybody.

PS:Section 59 is applied mainly to people that drive like tts and put other road users or pedestrians at risk..it may apply if you are sitting there revving the balls out of it but again..ttS!!..Need only apply.

Ahh, this problem again! Brings back fond memories of my Dad and I pushing the SEAC out of my garage, then out the close the garage was in and then 100m down the road to start the brute far enough away from everybody. ( well it was 4am on the morning of 'dawn tunnel run' in London ...!)

A quick Google of "section 59 and loud exhaust" returns results from many forums complaining the Police regularly issue section 59 notices for excessive exhaust noise. I know for a fact Sussex do as they bragged about it in our neighbourhood watch newsletter earlier this year promising a summer clamp down!

True.

But it would be for a noisy modified, or rusted through, exhaust.

If your car, bike etc is legal then it is legal.

My Velocette makes even the loudest Tiv sound quiet. It is a historic and totally standard vehicle.

As long as I am not contravening a law then by definition sec 59 cannot apply.

There must be an offence to start with.

Agreed

The NW newsletter made it clear that they are targeting modified cars nice quote about "we can normally tell as the tailpipe is much bigger than standard"!

I don't think anyone has a problem with original (but loud) cars and I actually agree with the Police stance on chavved up Novas with 6" exhausts and the terrible four cylinder drone they make.

When this lady had the cheek to come over and tell me not to start my car, at 10.15 on a Sunday morning, because she has a lie in, I was not at all rude to her. I explained to her quite calmly and clearly that I was not doing anything illegal or intentional to upset her. I told her the car and the exhaust were legal and that 10.15 even on a Sunday was not unreasonable. I also told her that I would act reasonably in the future if she was reasonable towards me. I use the car once or twice a week, if that, and hardly ever in the evenings. What would she do if I actually lived there and used it on a daily basis? After a long conversation of trying to reason with her, we didn't seem to be getting anywhere, as she could only see the situation from her point of view. That is why I had to end the conversation by telling her that I would use the car as and when needed, and that I couldn't always wait for her to wake up from her late lie in.

I've never had any complaints from my neighbours despite having some extremely loud cars. I have asked them if I've disturbed them and they know to let me know first if there's a problem.
Bear in mind that I often take the car in or out between 23:00 and 07:00 !!

Tony,

Read my forum topic a while ago for some funny stories too....

One of my neighbours complained at my 390 idling at 7.00pm !!! Hardly late or an anti social time...........Oh well, think he's only jealous that he hasn't got a wedge.
