Perceived problem with my PAS
Discussion
Hi All,
Before there are comments about cars with PAS remember anyone can rough it and jealousy is a powerful thing!!
Anyway i had noted that my car's PAS performance was getting less and assumed that it must be the pump failing or even worse a rack problem.
So this weekend i thought i would take a look at the fluid levels and size up the job of pump removal. So i syringed out some from the resovoir and found this:

Compared to what it should look like:

So all drained out and bled and normal service is resumed, so lesson learnt, keep an eye on the condition of the fluid!

Hi Mate..looks like two examples of two very different blood donors..1. The Devil & 2. A sacrificial lamb..Which reminds me i must clear the old devils blood out of my power steering pipes, Especially as i have refurbed yet another pump and fitted it..I think the first one looks like it has some metal filings in it which could suggest wear on the gear inside the pump, Does your pump make a loud noise when you turn it from one lock to the other?..Which is also how you bleed it..It should buzz a little but if its extra loud it might have worn internally a tad..The new fluid might go a little bit misty again as there is probably some dregs of old fluid still left in the rack..Cheers..Ziga
Hi Jim
No drain plugs, on the back of the pump is a banjo union and a return connection. So i cracked off the furthest connection on the rack carefully and let gravity work! As Zig says you cannot get it all out easily and I am sure there is a flushing solution somewhere but I would say that 90% is now changed. The pump was quiet Zig but just noticed that over time the amount of assist was getting less so fingers crossed I have caught it before anything terminal occurred!

Can you tell me is there a drain valve for the system and whats the access like chap?
Hi Jimbo..As chris says there is no drain valve as such but there are a few ways to replace and flush..1.Use a turkey baster to remove all the fluid in the reservoir..Fill with fresh..Run the engine and turn steering to full lock left and then right..Turn off and repeat a few times, This will clean by the power of dilution. When done bleed the system.
2.With the front wheels off the ground..Place a bucket under the rack where the unions are and undo the return line that goes into the rack..Ideally its best with two people as you then need to have the wheel turned fully to the left and then right as soon as the engine is started, At the same time you need to be pouring fresh fluid in..Trying to avoid running a dry pump as this will cause damage. It will pour out pretty quick though..Whatever you do dont rev the engine whilst turning the wheel.Turn off and replace pipe making sure the copper washer is in place, Top up and bleed.
3.The same method as 2 but with the return line to the pump disconnected and a fitting in the hose with some long tubing going into a bucket..You will need to cap off the spout on the pump as when you are filling it will come out of the return spout..replace and top up and bleed.
Please be aware that power sterring fluid is highly flammable!!
A good tip is to place a strong small magnet on a piece of wire and hang it on the inside of the pump obviously avoiding it falling in to the workings and then cleaning it a couple of times a week..This will remove any metal filings and keep the fluid clean.
I would say the turkey baster is the best method..This is the option i will be using..just got to remember to chuck the baster afterwards..Turkey tastes disgusting with power steering fluid on it..

Not sure if it's for sale fella, but it has stood there for quite a while it belongs to the ethnic family in the corner who seem to clean it from time to time!

Work on the car is slow, I thnik Ive sorte the TPS issue but cant start the car because the alternator is off, not just because of it not riving the water pump, but it simply wont start without it for some reason! must be the immobiliser!
