Mk 3 MX5 6 Speed Clutch - What's it going to cost me?
Discussion
I bought a 2007 2.0 Sport 6 Speed with only 22,000 miles on it. I've only done 800 miles in it but I've got an awful feeling the clutch is on it's way out. Started with an intermittent brake warning light. Reservoir is fine with fluid. Was getting progressively more difficult to engage 1st and was notchy in 2nd when cold. Now I think it feels like I'm losing acceleration/torque and using more revs to get anywhere. It's my first MX5 so would like to ask you seasoned owners whether this is likely to be clutch or slave? Also, what should I expect to pay to replace these. I don't do my own spannering so will have to find a garage. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Brake warning light has nothing to do with your clutch
I'd be more inclined to look at brake issues, maybe they're binding causing the performance loss.
But that wouldn't cause difficult to select gears and 'using more revs' - both of which suggest a clutch fault. Especially the more revs bit, which points to it slipping.I'd be more inclined to look at brake issues, maybe they're binding causing the performance loss.

No binding, free wheeling fine. Doesn't the warning light go on when the fluid (brake & clutch) is down too, and does the clutch not share the same hydraulic fluid as the brake?I'd be more inclined to look at brake issues, maybe they're binding causing the performance loss.

so is it slipping? revs increase but no acceleration?
is the clutch spongy? is the clutch reservoir losing fluid? it may just need bled but if it is there must be a problem for that to be the solution.
mat isn't under the clutch is it? ie clutch not fully down?
Reservoir is topped up and doesn't appear to be losing fluid. Clutch pedal isn't overly spongy (too light perhaps compared to my other cars, but that could just be the type of car). Biting point has always seemed 'lumpy' i.e. I seem to find I have to apply an inordinate amount of accelerator pedal to prevent from stalling from start off, but again, I did put that down to the marque rather than a problem. No mat and clutch fully depressed when engaging gears. Worse at cold start and then gets a little better when warm. Clutch isn't "slipping" per se, (I know full well what that feels like), the car just seems to have a much more linear (and slower) acceleration and feels less punchy in the rev range all of a sudden.is the clutch spongy? is the clutch reservoir losing fluid? it may just need bled but if it is there must be a problem for that to be the solution.

Thank you Paul. I was minded to come see you, in fact I was emailing you last week and then my PC had a temporary meltdown mid way through composing the email to you. Feel free to PM me with a date and a time. Other than Friday I'm pretty free this week. Cheers.Call in and see me and I'll advise as required......

Genuinely surprised that a clutch is gone at 22,000 miles...!
Mine is on 83,000 miles and no sign of a clutch needing replacing (yet) :-)
Yeah, I'm hoping it's something less serious. Car bought in an auction but with guaranteed mileage, just no other history to go by. Doesn't look abused, but then you never really know with these ex-lease cars do you.Mine is on 83,000 miles and no sign of a clutch needing replacing (yet) :-)
