I am looking to buy an X300 4.0. Seem to be strugging to find a good one, but have found one or two quite nice XJR6's. I wasn't originally looking for a supercharged one - I just want a wafter with leather etc, I understand the non charged 4.0's are capable of high 20's mpg on long journeys.
Unfortunately, much as the XJR's are quite appealing to me, I just worry I'd get irritated with the worse fuel economy. How much worse than the standard 4.0 are they? I'm not going to do a huge mileage, I have a TDi for daily use but don't want to find I avoid using the Jag if the MPG is down in the teens with even sensible driving. Are they as bad as V12's? I had one of those once, should I walk away and just get a 3.2....?

X300 3.2: 19.3 urban, 37.7 @ 56MPH, 31.1 @ 75 MPH

X300 4.0: 19.7 urban, 36.7 @56 MPH, 29.1 @75 MPH

X300 4.0 supercharged: 16.9 urban, 32.3 @56MPH, 26.4 @ 75 MPH.

General rule of thumb using the old measurement standard is to add all the figures together then divide by 4 to get an approximate real world figure in mixed trafic.

You'll find if you use the car for long distance touring you can usually improve the result by around 20%. Driven carefully but not slowly my X300 3.2 usually averaged somewhere between 24-27 MPG.

I've got an X308 (V8) XJR - a mate who had an X300 XJR tells me the consumption I get is similar to what he used to get in his.

I return about 15mpg average when doing lots of town & short (<10 mile) journeys mainly, but I had a run to Wiltshire the other day, and cruising sensibly on the motorways with the a/c off I got 28mpg for the whole trip - that was cruising at 70-80mph all the way.

Hope that helps & just get the XJR bought wink

If you did put aftermarket turbo on NA engine you will get same or better mileage but of course that would loose originality. (turbo improves efficiency, supercharger just adds power in the best case)
