Looking to treat myself to a toy as I'm bored of my diesel company car, the dilemma is between these two, new clio to the spec I want comes out at £17000. The other option is a used focus rs about 19-20k, now I know both are mentally fun, insurance isn't to dissimilar so need some help on which option to go for? I feel the focus rs is going to hold its money well compared to the clio.

I would imagine the ownership experience of the RS is on another level compared to the Clio.

Id say the RS would be ideal....the clio is a bit more on the weekend/track fun car in my opinion

There is no doubt the Clio will lose more cash as a new buy v the used RS.

The Focus is a family hatch so practical whereas the clio is a small city car not suitable for 4 adults.
One is rev the nuts off it the other is big turbo power

I love the Clio 200 but in that price range I'd probably go for the focus RS.

Indeed - if you got the Clio you would feel a tad short changed whenever you saw an RS

Can you get a RenaultSport Megane for that? Might be a better match for the Focus?

Megane RS250 or if you're feeling a bit more hardcore go for an R26.R.

Lets face it.

That makes the OP's decision a little harder.

Especially when you consider the Clio is even not in the same class.

not when you consider depreciation and the price of a remap?

I thought that video may make an apperance. However what relevance does it have to the OP? In this situation both are the same price - what 'class' one car is over another is irrelevant

OP go out next weekend and test drive them both. Then make a decision.

Maybe , but the one could always find a decent used Clio 200.

The Focus will be a more practical vehicle, and probably a little more comfortable, but there is no denying the Clio certainly holds its own.

Well, if nothing else, it features almost exactly the cars he asked about. Short of test driving them both I can't see it's any less relevant than some other posts

Background: owned a Clio 197 Cup, extensively driven (~ 5k miles) a Clio 200 with Cup chassis, currently own a Focus RS Mk2.

Opinion: the Clio doesn't even compare. The engine in the Focus feels more expensive than the entire Clio.

To toss a commonly referenced hat in the ring, I think the Clio might actually be more fun to drive. Certainly, if I were looking for a good investment I'd go with the Focus RS - at £17k vs a brand new Clio it will be worth more in a few years time when its time to sell on. But I had to pick between a say, a Focus that had done 2 or 3 years depreciating and a Clio of similar age, miles and condition (which would be substantially cheaper) I think I'd be tempted to go for the older Clio and save the rest.

If I really had to spend £17k though, and did not want something like a Skyline R33 GT-R V Spec and a huge pot of cash to run it, I'd get the Focus.

I think the lighter Clio, with it's revvy NA engine would be more fun more of the time than the Focus. As shown in the video, there is not a lot in it in reality and you'd have to be driving like a maniac to use the maximum potential of either car on a public road.
