Perfect Doughnuts!
Discussion
right, had a bash at making some doughnuts earlier, what a balls up!
there was something not quite right, even though they were cooked properly, and left a horrible almost burnt taste afterwards, adding more sugar and salt did not help
they were shallow fried, and the oil was nice and hot, using vegetable oil!
the measures i used were
Plain flour 230g
milk 1/4pint
1 egg
30g of sugar
2 tablespoons of bircarb
and 1 teaspoon of salt
25g of butter
what if anything have i done wrong!

My preference for frying doughnuts or anything battered/crumbed is rapeseed oil. I also found that using an oil thermometer to help maintain an even temperature makes a big difference to the end product. My experience is that cheap vegetable oil can leave an acrid taste if it gets too hot.
