F1 advice

I'm off to see the Spanish F1 race in a few weeks time, and this will be my first experience of a grand prix. The only other big race I've been to is Le Mans.

What advice can you give me to get the most out of it? We're flying out Friday afternoon so we'll see the qualifying plus main race. Our tickets for the stands are already booked but I forget which ones now, towards the cheaper end of the scale but not the cheapest.

I'm also worried about my ears... I suffer badly from ringing in my ears if I've been to a loud place (club/bar) so I want to invest in some effective ear defenders. A quick search brought up various types from the basic (£30 - 35SNR rated), to ones with FM radios, adjustable volume and much more. What do I need for an F1 race?

I don't think you will need to overly splash out on ear defenders if you're sitting in a grandstand. I've stood at corners and they can rattle off your ear drums and even ear plugs didn't help that much with me. But sitting back in any grandstand i didn't feel any need to use ear plugs or defenders. They do sell these at the circuits by the way, although they probably charge 100% more.

I've suffered from tinnitus for a decade or more - not fun but the price of being in the music business in my youth !

If you're often in noisy environments, then I'd really recommend getting a set of custom made plugs.
(expensive but what price for your hearing) or you can get a good generic set for a lot less

And I'd 100% recommend wearing some type of quality earplugs.

I went to Barcelona a couple of years ago to see the F1. We picked our tickets up at the circuit and they came with ear-plugs.

If you're not sure about spending a fortune, PM me your address and I'll mail you a couple of pairs. I had a bike, so I've got loads of pairs lying around. You will need them, unless you're a long way from the circuit.

Thanks for the offer, but regular ear plugs I'm well stocked up on already. I was really thinking about a full on pair of ear defenders for prolonged comfortable use.

I've taken big 3M ear defenders to motor racing before. They work very well - I am very protective of my hearing.
Good thing is that you can slide the little ear buds in underneath them and still listen to the radio commentary (if there's one available there in English).
