X350 XJR comparisons
Discussion
I currently own, and will probably be selling soon, a monaro vxr. Finishing uni soon means I want something a little more waftable, before I start earning and saving for something sporty again.
I was hoping to get some ideas of the interior of the jag compared to some of the other cars I am considering (A6 4.2, A8 W12, E39 M5, 750i). I like gadgets in cars and I have virtually none in the monaro so I am hoping to get some things to mess about with.
I like the idea of the big jag, think it looks great, is the performance able to match the looks? Can you hear the V8 when pressing on? Servicing expensive? Parts?
Just a general low down really from owners.
Quick edit to add, I'm 26, not that it makes a whole lot of difference.

Compared to a Monaro, I suspect the V8 would be rather muted.
It's there, but quiet. I can't remember where I read this description, but engine engine sounds like a supercharger with bolt-on V8, rather than the other way round.
Personally, I found the performance... not what I expected. It was fast, but with the smooth power delivery it hid the rate at which it was increasing speed a little too well.
Tires were £200 a corner for something decent, and I used to get 20mpg-25mpg over 15k, which included a good couple of thousand miles towing. I didn't have it long enough to suffer any big parts costs, and the service was normal cost, circa £250.
If you're after something wafty, I'd say it could be a fantastic choice. I know they say it wasn't as smooth as the older X300/X308, but I found mine simply beautiful on motorways, and surprisingly capable on good roads. My first drive home over great Welsh roads was with a bike following, and had about 20 of the most enjoyable miles I've ever driven. After a few overtakes and some brilliant twisty sections, I slowed to let him past as we caught some more slow traffic, and both he and his passenger gave me a thumbs up, then waved as I passed them where they'd stopped in the next village. I guess they didn't expect some pace from a large green limo.
Toys? They've got just about everything you can think of as standard... Mine had TV screens (useless as they were analogue, and I never sat in the back so never used the DVD!) adaptive cruise (not a fan) and the rear blind thingy. (That may be standard fit, I don't know.) I personally liked the interior, the high dashboard surrounds you. - Not the best standard standard stereo though... A bit poor for a top of the range car.
I turned out to have bought an absolute lemon BTW, and was forced to get rid before the used warranty ran out. It was an ex development car, and gave quite a few problems, compounded by a communication problem with Jaguar's IDS/SDD system. It's a shame, as it was a car I'd wanted for years. If you see a dark green one, black leather, 2005, let me know and I'll send my old numberplate. If it matches, RUN!

I went from a 2005 V8 Ford Mustang to an X350 XJR.
The main difference for me is that the comfort is quite unbelievable. The Jag is just such a beautiful car to travel in.
Performance is fantastic but so effortless that you don't realise how quickly it takes off. You can hear the V8 when its pushed but its just no way even close to being as good as the Mustang. The Supercharger whine is good fun though.
Running costs are fine using an independent specialist. I've not had any repairs to do other than routine maintenance. Mine was an 03 car with 102k miles on the clock and apart from a couple of non-working electrical accessories that I don't need everything seemed to be as good as new. At a steady 70MPH the computer says its returning 35 MPG (accurate or not?) and daily commuting yields between 21 and 26 depending how I drive.
As regards toys my favourite is the voice recognition system.
Even though I've had it for 18 months I still think of it as my new car which shows that the attraction hasn't worn off.
