Well, lets say 3500..

Is this a really stupid idea?

I really want to own one - preferably before super hits £2 a litre - and I don't have 10 grand.

I'm not fussed about fuel economy, i do 50 miles a week tops. I've checked servicing costs with a local specialist and it's really not much (150 per year) more than my 172 is costing. Consumables seem reasonable enough on the 4 as well.

Im aiming for something as close to standard as possible and don't have any plans to modify it in terms of power.

What are the big milestones for stuff like belts, turbo failure, suspension and so on?

My concern is whether I can get one for that sort of money that won't go bang immediately after handing the cash over..

Ta very much...

So yeah, am I on a short path to a huge bill? Is a scoob a safer bet? what else is there that'll beat the 172

A mate had an evo 4. It needed a water pump but ran well other than that. I think like with any cars there are good ones and there are lemons. Pick wisely.

Personal bias: i'd get a classic impreza wink

I'd roll a classic scoob too, but that's more personal preference than for reliabilities sake.

It does, to me sound like an easy way into some serious debt sooner or later.
