Average MPG for a standard Mk1 1.8?
Discussion
What are people getting? Our S/C'd Mk2 gets about 30 - 33 and that isn't driving like Miss Daisy (35 if driven by my wife)but the Mk1 is barely touching 30, usually about 28 and that isn't pushing especially hard.
Second question, do Magnecor leads make much difference over standard on a N/A engine? Although no apparent missing or juddering I think I will change plugs and leads anyway.

There are endless threads about mpg on here and every other forum. General consensus seems to average out at around 28mpg with some getting a lot more and some getting less.
What fuelling do you have on the SC car? I'm guessing it's not an AFPR, more likely at least an EMB or maybe MS...

27-28mpg generally
I got the magnecore leads- didnt really make any noticable difference to what was on there to be honest. Why are you considering them? I had a slight hesitation- changed the leads- no better, cleaned out the throttle body/ intake manifold with injector cleaner and it solved my problem.

Looks like the mpg is right then. The S/C one is running whatever came with the JR kit 120k miles ago, and I'm still getting better consumption!
Actually, when the Tamora was only 3.6l I could average about 27mpg.
Was thinking of changing the leads and plugs because (a) I only recently got the car, so thought that I would do it along with changing all the fluids and the cambelt, and (b) it feels so under powered against our other one that I wondered if it would make a difference.

Strange. No ECU faults thrown up, idles OK. Feels under powered, but that is against the S/C Mk" so I guess expected. Sometimes 'feels' to hesitate under load on hills....
Not sure what to look at; think I will start with plugs, leads and air filter.
Hesitations would make me suspect the leads. Mine did it when trying to accelerate hard. Everything else seemed fine. Changed the leads (at the time about 8 years old), and problem went away. Not sure what to look at; think I will start with plugs, leads and air filter.

OEM leads?
I think I used these as the replacements: http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/high-performance-ignitio...
As above, I ran my 1.8 mk1 for 100k miles and 28mpg was normal, on a longer run it would get low 30s and less on track days. I replaced the leads every couple of years as the car started to hesitate a bit on acceleration, new leads sorted it every time.
[ETA]
I just used the cheap ones from MX5 Parts as even replacing them again was cheaper than going for the expensive ones.
