After spending a long time (and being unable) to find the spec of E90 330d Saloon i want, i've looked around and always had a soft spot for the new-shape merc.

I think in the sport trim level it looks lovely, and think the estate is an awesome shape, even if i dont need an estate.

If price is anything to do by, the merc's seem to be coming down quicker than the e90, and although i'd probably get the 2.2 diesel, i did see a lovely silver estate with the 3.5 petrol which had done just less than 80k and seemed pretty mind for £12k.

I've never driven a merc, and dont like the way they still use the parking brake system from the 1920's, and although the sat nav looks nice, im still a bit unsure about the tv rotating out of the dash, compared to the normally mounted bmw idrive.

Opinions?

the most modern c class dont have the rotating screen- its built into the dash. Oddly, the nesest shape 3 series does have the screen stuck on top of the dash, looking like it pops up but doesnt.

Go for the revised c clsss if you can, and get the command system. Its very good, and unlike some german sat navs, you can enter the full postcode.

BMW every time, if you considering a Merc estate you should also consider the E91 (touring)

Im on my 3rd E91 now, a 335d, with the two previous being 330d and 335d, I can't fault them, all have been 100% reliable, a decent drive and rather fuel efficient for the performance on offer.

I don't particularly like Mercs TBH

Undoubtedly the BMW is the better machine - in almost, if not every aspect. But, the divide between them is not as big as you would really notice IMO, and unlike the majority of PH (i think), i would go for the Mercedes!

Not convinced that the BMW is objectively better, just different.

The BMW certainly handles (marginally) better and the 335d is a gem of an engine; but the C-class has a better ride, bigger boot, more rear leg-room and I think the lower powered diesels are more efficient for their performance.

The Merc looks vastly better to my eye, too.

I hear you, im just not a fan of the touring. It looks out of shape to me, and i the roof seems to drop at the rear to much and it looks a bit squashed biggrin

I drove a C class from Newcastle to Gatwick and back and it's a very nice car. I own a 3 series and it's much more dynamic and fun to drive. They're both good cars, the Merc is more comfy and the BM is more 'schporty' as a well know TV car journo might say.

I think im right, but just to make sure, the Merc is RWD and chain driven, same as the e90, yes?]

Also, is there a difference between normal nav and command? I thought nav only applied to the tv that comes out of the dash, but does nav also come in a smaller mounted screen?

How could you be happy with the 2.2 diesel if you were after a 330d? My friend bought a 2009 350cdi a month or so back and is getting on with it really well..

If you're not too bothered for the performance why not look at the 325d? Still a 3.0 but substantially cheaper. Still the car you really want, albeit with a different engine.

That 2.2 diesel can have over 200bhp, which is more than the 325d.
