So me and the wife are mulling over what to do now that i am working in the city - lease or buy?????

I will be catching the train in and therefore we have no reason to own two cars. We will sell both and look to aqcuire one car...

Our mileage will reduce significantly. What do you guys think we should do???

She wants a nice car so she can use it when visiting clients for her business (no pun intended!) and I want a nice car too..

Would it be cheaper to lease a nice car and then hand the keys back after three years. rather than buy an expensive car and then take the hit on depreciation etc?

I gather some lease deals even pay for your insurance etc...

We are looking at Q7's, FFRR or an X5 getmecoat

Leasing is not a 'cheap' way to do it... you still pay depreciation etc. its just that it is rolled up into the monthly payments. You lease if you don't have the available funds to afford the car you want with 'cash' or you reckon you can make a better return on your 'cash' than you are paying on the lease... Its credit, pure and simple, and needs to be handled as such. You really need to think about your budget and how much you are comfortable spending etc. then work out what is the most logical way for you to achieve that purchase.

Nah, bet she'd prefer one of these, especially this one.

Low miles, meeting clients, what could be better? smile

What do you need the car for? If you've got kids and do DIY \ trips to B&Q etc then a FFRR sounds perfect.

If you've not got kids or the need to carry passengers often, why not get something a little more interesting? Maserati Gran turismo or Quattroporte, Jag XJ supersports, Aston Martin?

Leasing is almost always the most expensive option as they still need to factor-in depreciation.

Why not buy a two year old ffrr and then pay it off and in 3 years you will own it

For me leasing is much more attractive - a fixed monthly outgoing, not tieing up a large anount of cash, no hassle with trying to sell a car at the end of the term etc etc. It's not for everyone but for a lot of people it works.

BMW will give you £10k off a 7 for example on a lease, plus whatever you can negotiate locally plus they take it back after 3 years no question - I would imagine having to sell a 3 year old RR / X5 / Q7 or any other luxo car just out of warranty will involve a large pot of vaseline.

Also in my experience, the cost of finance has always been balanced by the discount and deals available at the time - so it has been almost like for like in cost, with the advantage swayed in favour of finance for the reasons I mentioned before.

In your shoes, I'd go for an E70 X5 (the new X5 M50D has made it onto the price list - 3.0 tri-turbo, 380bhp / 550lb/ft but too rich for me).

The car will be needed to lug large loads and for the kids and so on. Hence the reason for the FFRR over a RRS..

The RRS looks very small inside...very deceptive! The reason for a 4x4 is the carrying capacity...

A friend of mine has a tidy but modest car for visiting clients, so they don't think he makes too much profit out of them.

I've no idea if this is sound business prectice, but he is many orders of magnitude more successful than I am, so it seems to work for him.

Pretty much. She runs a distribution company on the side and needs some decent space for carrying loads of boxes.

She currently runs around in an S2000 which is comical!

I agree 100%. I personally want a Skoda Yeti,. Ticks every single box going for me. However, as she is the one going to see customers and making the sales she realizes that the car she drives does carry some weight in regards to customers wanting to do business...

I would hand on heart take a Yeti tomorrow. But its the wife who will not be seen dead in another Skoda!

We currently own a Fabia VRS which i love dearly.....
