Transmission cooling
Discussion
I am running a 5 speed quaife box with a tuned LS7 and have noticed that even on a 'normal' run the box gets so hot you cannot touch it.
These boxes are smaller than G50's etc. and use less oil so i assume the self cooling capacity is limited.
I am hoping to track the car soon but concerned that the box/oil will overheat.
Where is the best place to purchase a rad. and electric oil pump to keep it cooler?
Thanks,
Martin.

Summit and Jegs do cooler pumps and some very smart small cooler rads with built in stats/fans, around 8 to 12 inch ish square sizes... The cheapest route I found was to put your own kit together this way.
There are complete kits too, CMS do one from memory and it wasn't too expensive but whether it would be a bolt and go fit for the Ultima needed to be confirmed.
G luck.

When we spoke to Quaife they told us they didn't have anything suitable for the torque of the LS7.
With regards to cooling and plumbing etc, we use Thinkauto, helpful people, good prices and their service is excellent.

Good advice on speaking to Quaife.
My Hewland has an internal pump which I feed to an external cooler (not a terribly large one). I also have a thermostat (a Mocal one) so things warm up reasonable quickly (I like it over 60°c before putting much through it). With this set up the gear lube runs around 90° to 95° (I can't remember if that was on leaving or entering the box but whatever it was where Hewland told me mesure it) with an ambient of about 15°.
Also ask Quaife what gear lube you should be using with your torque output as higher torque can sometimes me thicker lube.

Hi,
Thanks for the replys.
Spoke to Quaife several times about the box and it has been modified to handle more power than standard but they have never tested it for temperature data, so they cannot even tell me what the maximum operating temp should be - find this very odd!!!
They do not offer any additional cooling aids either - which again seem odd since a lot of their boxes are used for racing.
The only oil they state you must use is Titan Syn5 (fully synthetic) otherwise it voids the warrenty - i will get in touch with the manufacturer and find out what max temp they recommend for the oil.
When i was using a Getrag box in another GTR, that never got so hot that you could not touch it with 'normal' driving.
