Phantom running costs
Discussion
Completely pointless thread in terms of real life, but with used Phantoms going for £125k (which isnt too bad really considering the new price) I want to know what sort of running costs these cost to own?
Say you do 5000 miles a year.
I know insurance is group 20 (which isnt much really as a 2.8 vr6 golf worth £2k is group 17) and you get around 10mpg which means for £100 of fuel you get 400 mile range.
Whats the deal with used car warranty, things that break, known problems etc?

Not sure your MPG sums are quite right.Say you do 5000 miles a year.

£125k on a second hand car and you're asking about MPG and Insurance costs.Say you do 5000 miles a year.

Something isn't adding up!
I had a discussion with a chap only a couple of weeks ago about his Phantom. His had done high miles (compared to others) and he said it was the electrical gremlins that cause the most hassle. Constantly showing warning lights, then going off, that sort of thing. Once out of warranty, repair costs could be high and so a warranty is essential, he suggested.
Oh and I agree - depending on the price you use, £100 of fuel will get you 150 miles or so, certainly not 400 !

OK, the fuel thing was badly calculated, but the OP's questions are fair enough.
If you were the sort of person who might consider a car at £90-100k, would running a Phantom be any more expensive than anything else in that bracket? Sure, for the original purchaser it was a case of 'if you have to ask...' but for the owner ten years down the line, buying at £70k or so, running costs will be far more of an issue.
To answer the OP's questions: I have no idea, but I suspect that depreciation will continue to be biggest cost (by far) of ownership until a Phantom gets to 15 years old or so, after which a well-maintained one will probably not lose much more. Realistically, that means £50k or so.

Plenty of cars are group 20 and there's a vast difference between their perceived risk exposure so the premium won't be linear to the Golf.A ratty E34 M5 that costs a sniff under £4k is group 20. There's no way a G20 policy for a car with a market value of £100k is going to cost anywhere near the same.

So far they don't look that bad, depreciation wise, do they?! I see a 2004 with 35k miles for £100k. An 8 year old car worth 40% of it's new price sounds pretty ok to me?A 2010 with 5k miles for £190k - that's probably a big hit for the new buyer in raw cash terms, but a good used buy I would wager?

It'll be interesting to see where these kind of cars bottom out.....I suppose they are much harder for specialists to deal with...you need to be more an electrical engineer than a mechanic! I imagine running costs would be much more than for the previous generation RR's ? TonyHetherington said:

My estimate of settling at £50k is, I think, a but too generous. I can't see a decent one of these ever going for £10k, but it'll not take too much for them to get into the £20-30k range. We never thought we'd be there with the recent Astons, but look at the 'Trader, and there are any number in this range. OK, this is a much more expensive car, but the running costs will be astronomical. and the number of people for whom this car makes any sense at all are few and far between.
Fair point on the Astons - they've got lower than people imagined they would.
I have this theory about used cars that I struggle to put into words, but bare with me. And it's that used cars are highly effected by £1000 snotters.
My theory, I propose, is that there needs to be "room" for upper cars to sit in the price range. Now that £1000 snotters are actually not that bad in terms of "drive around, be reliable-ish", it pushes everything above it up in terms of price.
Thus, I reason that a Phantom would never get as low as £50k purely because there are so many more cars that need to be beneath it.
Does that make any sense at all?!

Can you please say that to V8mate, it would be interesting to hear your comments on his £10k value theory I have this theory about used cars that I struggle to put into words, but bare with me. And it's that used cars are highly effected by £1000 snotters.

Interesting question.
Ignoring insurance, depreciation and MPG for a moment, how much would RR charge for a service? How much for consumables like brakes, discs, etc. What's RR hourly rate?
There was a thread in the Bentley subforum where an Arnage has a scheduled major service that lasts 18 hours or somesuch. How much was that!
Unlikely ever to be in a position to own one (lottery non withstanding) but ,like the OP, curious.
