shimming vs adjustable push rods
Discussion
hello all,
Is there any reason why I shouldn't use adjustable push rods to set my hydraulic lifter preloads on my new engine build. My train of thought is as follows:
I'll be running quite high compression (heads skimmed, block decks skimmed) thus the relative lengths of standard push rods would be long and the pedestals will need a lot of shimming to bring it down.
This is going to alter the rocker geometry a bit and as my build is fully balanced with a lightened fly and cam designed for use quite high up the rev range, I could run into problems.
Adjustable rods solve this problem at a stroke, but it seems not many people use this route and go down the shimming road anyway, leading me to think there might be a reason why...
Cheers,
Ryan

Can't now - My Crower 50233 arrived yesterday - I'm committed
Thats' the cam that I was going to fit but the twiceing fecker sent the wrong one then wouldn't change it,....rant over.
I would set it up with shims, check the numbers and rocker angles an if in doubt, go adjustable.
You wouldn't be the first.
I just run a normal '885' cam in my Griff 500 and use adjustable rods. It probably makes no difference whatsoever, but I thought it would be better to get accurate pre-loads across all the followers instead of having to settle for shims that suit the majority of pre-load but not necessarily all of them.

Hi Marty, did you need to enlarge the holes on the heads and have you had any problems with the rods breaking or splitting thus far?haircutmike said:
Breaking or splitting!
Is there evidence of this?
To quote Pum from this thread:Is there evidence of this?

I don't fancy adjustable pushrods again as I really didn't like the way they split after a few years. So I'm looking at adjustable rockers as the alternative to be able to get the valve gear adjustments right on every cylinder and hopefully then cure the compression problems.

Spend mentioned adjustable rockers, yank I believe.
I make you right, I did Email these guys some time back http://www.harlandsharp.com/ and they can provide for the Rover and not as costly as you would imagine
Never much liked the fact you have to press the ends into those adjustable push rods and would imagine this is the cracking/failure point as Debaron pointed out
hoping that's a 1 off though
