On a fast A road on my regular route to work this sign has popped up. Do you think they are trying to warrant a speed camera in the future?

In the last year have been driving this road twice a day, at least 5 days a week. In all that time there has been one fatal accident which was not caused by speed.
Where do they get the figures? Do they include wildlife?

Im not whinging (yet) as the sign may make people think about what they are doing abit more. However, its hard to read the whole sign as they have put it on a twisty section!

That's about as useful as having a sign outside a hospital which says:

"...n deaths due to MRSA bug this week..." or

"...n deaths due to neglect / cost-cutting / cigarettes..."

A32 eh? Well there have been some nasty smashes in the part between the Roebuck pub and the sawmills.

Yes, pretty much all were caused by people pulling out of junctions into traffic on the road.

- I think one was a car overshooting the junction coming of the Forest of Bere. A bike smashed into it's side, killing the rider. Shortly afterwards the undergrowth was cut back, the lines repainted and a bank sliced back to give a better view.

- Another was a car driven by a teenager stalling while exiting the junction near the bride at Kingsmead - it was hit by a coach coming over the bridge and killed two and injured one.

IMO putting the sign there is silly, they should really put signs on the approaches to junctions because more care should be taken when exiting onto the A32. Only today somebody pulled straight out of the Bere forest junction in front of me.

edit: I'm talking about the Wickham end here, I'm not sure where the other side is but it would have be the other side of the West Meon Hut to make 151 casualties. There is another sign on the A272 road, of which 99% of casulaties are bikers doing ludicrous overtaking manoeuvres. Yesterday I very very nearly hit a biker who was on my side of the road overtaking a car on a blind bend with solid white lines.

The sign that really got me was in one of the villages on the way down to Goodwood FOS this year.

It was an official metal sign, but was child's crayon drawing with the words "slow down, naughty motorists" in child's writing.

Just about sums up the current lentilist think-of-the-children attitude towards motoring these days.

There are several of these signs on the road between Reading and Wallingford. Only one refers to speed, the others say things like 'Don't drive too close'. I haven't a clue if they're having any impact.

Surely with that number of casualties (which I'd take with a pinch of salt) there would be a camera there now. Obviously meets the rules ...

My thoughts exactly.

As for the accidents one of the deaths that has been mentioned was a friend of the family so I believe that the junctions should be made safer before they just go and plonk another speed camera in. The accidnet wasnt caused by speeding. The junctions is right after a corner.

I think the sign is a good idea but should have better placement (not on a corner like it is) and also the text should be spread over a couple of signs. There is too much to read on the sign for the conditions.

To be exact as you drive down the road within about 30 meters or less it goes:

Crossroads
Corner to right
Sign
Corner to left

For anyone local this sign is opposite the church at Wickham.

Im not bashing the idea, just trying to add constructive and positvie critisim to it.
A bit more thought and it would be a good idea.

There's a similar sign on the A605 heading towards Peterborough from the Thrapston turn-off. It states in big scary letters:

74 CASUALTIES IN 3 YEARS

Or something very similar. The thing is, it has been there for the past 5 or 6 years and the figure never changes!

So is it 74 accidents in the last 3 years? Or 74 accidents in some random selection of 3 years? Or is it all just a big lie?

Deceiving gits...

Suerly what we need is a sign saying BE BLOODY CAREFULL ON THIS JUNCTION. And a bit later SOME MUPPETS PULL OUT WITHOUT LOOKING!

Because we know those casualty figures include Mrs Jones who fell off her push bike on some ice, Littel johnny who tripped on the kirb outside his grandads drive 3 miles away etc.,....

There are a bunch of these along the A404 Wycombe to Amersham. Interestingly, since the signs went up saying 142 casualties in the last 3 years, around 6 months ago, the number hasn't risen. So they must be working.

Personally I think they do alert the driver to a potential hazard ahead. But I agree that you can have too much information.

BTW - What is a casualty? Someone being taken to hospital? How many deaths and how many actual incidents? A coach hitting a milk float and the kids all needing shock treatment at hospital could mean 50+ 'casualties'.

There was another accident there a couple of weeks ago and they hacked back the undergrowth and trees quite a bit so you can now see the bridge from the junction. Quite why somebody didn't spot this when investigating the previous accident I have no idea.

They have also put in reflective posts at the junctions, this is quite a good idea because they mark the eges of the junction for traffic on the main road and also help prevent people from overshooting the junction by putting a single post right in front of them on the far side of the road.

As for people stalling cars this is not something you can easily solve. Automatic gearboxes are a good idea but since they are not often fitted to small engined cars I doubt many new drivers could afford to insure one.

I noticed the overhaul of the junction but couldnt work out what good the posts were. Now I understand though. (I never come from that direction so couldnt see the benefit).

AS for the stalling junction, perhaps more signs warning the junction is there. More SLOW type signs would help too.

ALl these signs are only of use to people that pay attention to them and have had the proper road education though. Although I may not go any slower for a junction I position myself in the road better (for both mine and their visibility) and am more cautious.
Its these sort of things that will stop the accidents, not stoping speeders.

However. They havent put up a speed camera yet so it looks like they are really actually trying to make the road safer the right way. Good on em too. I like to see my tax money spent in this way.

A while back there was a sign at Scaling Dam on the A171 Whitby to Guisborough road referring to 111 casualties in the previous 3 years. That sign has now been altered, but it remained there in its original form for several years. It can not have been right all the time. There is a similar type of message on the A66 near Scotch Corner.

At least the new sign on the A171 now quotes a lower accident figure, and adds the words 'Well done'.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Ahh, is that the stretch that they have made a 40 limit? You watch, they have put more white paint on the road than an accident with a Dulux lorry. What's the betting they then turn around and say the speed camera works!

There's an even better one on there today, it just says "48 injured" nothing more, no timescale or anything. Useless!

I think a bit of wanton "mindless" vandalism is in order here, possibly involving slipping out in the dead of night, with a big fat black permanent marker, to write the words ; " Is that all?" underneath their casualty figure.

Maybe it's a target figure?

Or maybe it's a thinly veiled threat
