Currently looking for my next purchase.

I *think* I have my heart set on a Mitsubishi Evo. I've been looking for a while and am pretty certain that its what I want..... but I keep getting niggled by the thought that i'm missing out on something else.

Budget £6k.

Very very few other restrictions - My commute to work is 5 miles often done on the push bike so MPG is not an issue.

Car will be my only vehicle however that doesn't mean I won't look at two seaters etc, there is only me and the missus.

I don't have a garage - so i'd prefer something that doesn't leak and has its own roof.

Insurance group not a concern - it can't get much worse than an Evo can it?

I'm not the handiest with a spanner so something that is mildly relaible would be peferable.

Other than its pretty much an open playing field.

So what am I missing?

At that budget, and given that you like Evos, I would also be looking at Imprezas (probably the WRX). You can get 6 year old cars with low mileage for that budget.

Or a 2002 STi

I guess Imprezas if you're looking at Evos, or maybe an E36 M3.

I think it may be the other way round. If you bought something else you may regret not buying the Evo?

Just get the Evo.

A 5 mile commute in an Evo may not be a worry on fuel usage, but short hops like that will increase servicing requirements, which are already short enough.
Worth bearing in mind if you do opt for one, or a Scooby.

I assume he normally travels by bike, but probably uses the car for terrible weather days or when he is a bit lazy, so shouldn't be a problem smile

What are you missing? Well either nothing or a lot... tongue out

Really depends on what you are wanting from the car. Personally I think an Evo would be great, although I'm not sure quite what Evo you'll get for £6k, personally I'd like an VIII or IX which I think are above your budget.

I guess things to note, an Evo is still a 4 door family car and due to being somewhat chavved up from the factory means certain people won't like or understand it. It'll eat through tyres and brakes and like a good drink, so despite humble origins they aren't the cheapest of things to own.

Also the AWD and turbo motor make them a very specific type of performance car, very good at going silly fast. But if you are a hooligan then you'll be unlikely to fully exploit it's limits on the public road, or even track day as you'd likely get black flagged.

There are quite a lot of 'alternative' cars at this money, bit it similar speed but more comfy with a more luxo barge, or some sort of hairy chested sports car with a tendency for wheel spin and sideways action or even some feather weight precision 2 seaters. And a large array of FWD hot hatches if practicality plays a big factor.

How about an MR2 Turbo? Loads around for that sort of money, reliablish and lots of drama.

Or an FD RX7. If I were spending your money it woud be on an FD.

I'd personally look at:

Honda S2000 / Civic TypeR / DC2 Integra
Leon Cupra R (225) with some change for mods or a mental Ibiza 1.8T (one on ED38 with 250bhp for £6k)
VW Golf GTi 1.8T Anniversary
Lotus Elise (Mk1)
Kit Car of some sort?
VX220
Monaro (Fairly untidy one for that sort of money though)
Clio 182 / Megane R26
Old Boxster 2.5
Skyline R32
Cooper S (Not my choice)!
Focus ST

I'd go for a soft top, like an Boxster. Despite the rain at the moment, it's a great experience in summer and while it not accelerate as quick as an evo, it'll be a far more involving ride in so many other aspects.

Thanks for the suggestions so far folks.

With regard to the Evo - i'm looking at a VI - VIII - I prefer the looks of the 6 but i've been offered a nice 8 in budget, which is also more refined than the VI.

I've been looking into them for a fair while now so am familiar with the running costs. Also accustomed to the reaction of people when I mention buying an Evo. They usually revolve around the words "chav" - but I can live with that - i'm buying for me not them.

I've already got an MX5 - so thats that suggestion out of the window....

MR2 Turbo is something i've considered.

RX7 Terrifies the life out of me, No experience with them at all, other than "Arrggghhhh they all need engine rebuilds"

Impreza - Just don't interest me - unless I can have one way out of my budget. If i'm having a rally rep it'll be an Evo.

Z4 would be nice but I odn't think i'd get what I want in my budget.

The onyl thing from the suggestions so far that has really piqued my interest is the 156 GTA - Mainly due to it being absolutly jaw droppingly gorgeous.

ETA: Have also in the past considered Elise, VX220 and kit cars - I don't think I'll get anythign decent with regard to the Elise and VX220 and I'd rather not have a leaky kit car parked on the drive. hehe

Things like the Golf GTI, BMW 330 etc etc just don't interest me.

A nice Boxster could interest me but surely i'd be looking at poverty spec everything at this price point?

This would be my 6k few restrictions list.

TVR Chimaera
Alfa GTV V6
Alfa 147/156 GTA
Fiat Coupe Turbo
Porsche 944 S2/Boxster
Lotus Elan M100 Turbo

All far more of an event than an Evo imo, despite it's impressive turn of speed/traction I can't get over the blinged up saloon look.

I have no shame, if you can strech your self alittle further. My car would upset an evo down most back roads. its also arguably cooler!

yes Ish IMO. I had an Impreza and the incredible pace and grip was ultimately a bit dull.

Mk1 Elise that doesn't leak and for 6k ? ..... Try again.

Nor will a Vx220 like being left outside ...

Going from looking at high power AWD's to 1.8t FWD hatch backs why ?

Monaro however would be a good shout an early CV8 could be had for that money.

Could probably a squeeze a 3.2 bizarre at that money...... 2.5 >shudder<
