What would be the expected life of 996 turbo brake discs on normal road driving? I tend to drive the car reasonably hard.

Brake life is what it is.

Your 'reasonably hard' driving might not be that hard on the brakes or it might be the hardest braking of anyone.

As aside a little more aggressive braking can result in less wear/tear on the brakes. Nothing real harsh, but it is easier on the brakes to when coming to a stop waiting a bit before applying the brakes (when safe to do of course) so the brakes get applied harder but for less time, vs. applying the brakes lightly a long ways from the stop and leaving the brakes applied as the car slows and slowly rolls to a stop.

Whenever possible I wait a bit or I'll give the brakes a bit of a hard application to scrub some speed then release the brakes and when closer to the stop apply them again. Or if possible I'll let the car coast to a stop and then use the brakes to hold the car still if necessary.

Anyhow, by way of comparison vis a vis Turbo brake life, I can tell you just today when picking up my 03 Turbo after some servicing (oil/filter, tranny/diff fluid, alignment, having the trash blown out of the front bumper) the original brakes still have some life left and the car has 90,222 miles with around 80K of those miles (I bought the car used with around 10K miles on it) consisting of 'reasonably hard' driving from me.

Sincerely,

Rockster.

You will find its not worn discs that will require changing, more often then not its the inner edges being excessively corroded and I do mean excessive. No matter what the front faces look like, next time you have a chance have a look at the inner face of the discs......I bet if they are a few years old you will be shocked.
Other reason for disc change is them being warped. I have had a set do that but its not that often.

That is very impressive. Is it a particularly dry climate?

Thanks for the advice. My front discs were changed 15K miles ago when I bought the car by a well respected indie. I am getting some vibration through the steering wheel when I am braking hard so it is being looked at by my local indie tomorrow.

Your description above is More likely to be warped discs or rusted inner surface than pure wear

Or possibly worn bushes in suspension arms.
At early stages I'd deterioration, this will often show up through braking.

I had the coffin arms replaced recently and the suspension inspected by CG so should be ok. Its a rumble when braking which is more noticable at high speed. Indie has advised they are going to skim the discs.
