Have been getting very tempted by the French pocket rocket as a 2nd/track car. I have driven both in limited amounts, more so a 182.

As this will be track toy & occasional weekend toy, I am not bothered about cosmetics or miles, or interior as I will be looking to remove seats and replace with buckets in the first instance, maybe a full interior strip & cage at a later date.

So, head says 172 cos they are cheaper.

But, I keep getting pulled towards a 182.

I am aware of the technical/spec differences between the two, and the various cup models.

Anyone got experience of both that can help me decide??

rsv gone!

Is 10bhp stock really going to make any difference. Just buy on condition/price and, as part of your track upgrades, flash the ECU.

Iv'e heard that the difference can be gained through breathing mods although that could be and probably is a load of ste.

As above 10hp can't be that much difference.

A Ph1 172 or a 172 Cup would make the most sense surely? Lighter = better than 10bhp increase, it is difficult (& expensive) to get more power out of them without FI or ITBs etc so lightweight is the way to go.

I am not really concerened about the 10bhp difference, or weight difference that much as the seats and other unwanted items will be removed....

I don't know what it is that is driving me toward the 182, maybe its those twin exhausts....

I suppose what I am really after is:

I have decieded that I want a RS Clio. Is it worth spending the extra on a 182?

I had the same conundrum and went for the 182. It isn't just 10bhp and twin exhausts, there are a number of suspension changes, a wider track, different equipment etc. IMHO the 182 is worth the extra, the only downside is that if you want a spare wheel, you have to keep it in the boot.

172 cup is the quickest.

Actually, reading your post again properly you would probably be best off with a 172 cup. The full fat 182 with cup chassis is the best daily road car but for an occasional weekend use and trackdays then the 172 cup would be cheaper and fufil your requirements best, as the toys on the 182 are rather pointless in a track car.

In which case a 182 Cup would be on the cards. If it's going to be stripped, the extra weight of the 182 could soon be lost.

Personally, i'd go for a 172 cup if it was going to be stripped out. Cheaper purchase price/tyres etc.

I had use of a FF 182 for a few weeks a couple of years ago, and was very impressed. But this is just the sort of advice I need to convince me that a 172 is the way to go.........

You can only get Racing Blue in the 182, and everyone knows that this is the best colour...

With the optional racing stripes, then I believe it is. When it's standing still of course.

172 Cup has thinner glass, no AC, no ABS or TC so is c80kg lighter to start with, I have one that I hillclimb & thats why I chose it, know what you mean about the twin exhausts on the 182 but if you're that bothered I believe you can mod a 172 to achieve the same look...

If you're going to leave it standard, buy a 182 Trophy or 182 with cup suspension.

However, i you are likely to 'play' with it, get a normal 172, 172 cup or 182 without cup suspension.

Reason? The cup packed 182 has different bolt spacing on the front strut which severley limits your choice of aftermarket coilovers!!

Brilliant cars, i've had 4.

Important differances between the 172 Cup and 182 Cup are as follows, and made a big differance:

- 172 doesn't have ABS
- Revised front and rear suspension on 182
- Uprated springs on 182
- Wider front and rear track on 182
- 24mm anti-roll bar on 182
- Exhaust manifold improved on 182

I believe there are more uprated parts in the engine aswell. Unless you can get all that done on a 172 Cup for less than the differance between that and a 182 Cup, I'd go for the 182.
