So I'm taking Mrs J away for an weekend to The General Tarleton in Ferrensby, and would like to have a nice Sunday lunch on the way back.

I have read good things about Storm Brewing at Grant's Hotel in Harrogate, but does the PH hivemind have any better ideas?

There's nothing wrong with the food at the GT, but I have to assume you're having dinner there, which is fine. "On the way back" to where? What direction?
Going north east.... The Crab & Lobster, Asenby nr. Thirsk (close to the A1). Always good with great food and a really nice atmosphere.
Going slightly noth east.... The Dining Room at Boroughbridge nr. Ripon (but I doubt you'll get a reservation without plenty of notice).
Going West... The Angel at Hetton, nr. Skipton (formally the big sister restaurant to the GT). The Brasserie at The Devonshire Arms, Bolton Abbey.
Close by in Follifoot, nr. Harrogate.... The Clocktower Restaurant at Rudding Park Hotel. (Chef Stefanie Moon is currently on Great British Menu).
Close by in Ramsgill, Pateley Bridge.... The Yorke Arms. Michelin starred, fairly expensive but stunning and always a treat.
Further 'up North' Yorkshire.... The Blue Lion East Witton or Wensleydale Heiffer in West Witton. Both great lunch venues but make sure you book early.

I could go on, and on, and on, and on.
Let us know whether it's a good pub lunch you're looking for, or something a bit more special. Harrogate/Knaresborough area, or out in which direction?

Haven't tried Storm Brewing and have heard little about it. My personal favourite in Harrogate would be The Orchid at the Studley Hotel, or Van Zeller's in Montpellier Street. Banyan Bar & Kitchen on John Street has decent and reasonably priced food and a funky atmosphere.

That's a great post - thanks!

Heading back up north, towards Teesside, and looking for a good pub lunch. The Crab & Lobster sounds handy.

I would have booked into the Grinkle Park hotel, but they're full on the weekend in question (beginning of June).

The Crowne Inn, Roecliffe, nr Boroughbridge. Excellent Sunday lunch, rare beef, warm bread, good wines.
Drum and Monkey, Harrogate. Seafood/fish restaurant. A cut above.
White Bear, Masham. Next door to the Black Sheep Brewery. Top class fud.

Well, we went to the GT in the end and because the weather is awful, decided not to bother with going out for lunch. Just as well, really; still stuffed from last night!

And it was wonderful. From the service to the room to the food (dinner and breakfast), everything was just so.

Don't forget to tell the hotel that, so many people don't bother and just the bad reviews are the ones that stick (Trip Advisor for example)
