Right, i'm reaching out to the PH world for a bit of help here.

I'm 30, just opted out of having a company car for the first time in about 10 years, and have only ever held limited milage policies on trackday/fun weekend cars.

I've bought myself a '57 plate 1.9 Vectra CDTi SRi that I pick up this Friday, and so far i'm being ruined by insurance quotes.

Got the standard SP30 3 points and £60 fine from 2 years ago, and live in a low risk area, and am employed as a computer services account manager working from home mostly, so my annual mileage is under 10k.

The quotes im getting so far are all well over £800 per year.
Any ideas how to get it lower, without lying or breaking the law?

Please help.

Add other people to the policy

Park on the road instead of driveway or garage

What postcode are you in?

Do you have a letter from your company stating you were accident free for X years? Some insurance companies will take this as proof of NCB. Even if they only credit you with 1 year NCB, it's often a 50% discount.

Get the top 5-10 quotes you've got back on a comparison site and phone them all.

"We can do £650"
"That's a shame, the last one said £600"
"Just one second sir..."

Next, etc. Also add as many people as possible with many years NCB as named drivers.

Try changing your job title to something that is true, but worded differently, this could help.

Also, even at 30, adding parents, girlfriends etc can help to bring down your quote.

Have you been given any NCD for your clean company car history.

Have you tried adding a 'lower risk' partner to the policy?

I can't get the NCB from the company policy, and havny tried adding my partner.
She's 32, with a full clean licence, living at the same address, so i guess it's worth a go. Can't imaging it'd drop too much though.

Your company should be able to give you a letter to give to your insurance company, stating something along the lines of 'Mr Skater12 has had X years company car use with no accidents or endorsements'. Your insurance company may accept this as proof of no claims. I've done this before and was given 2 years NCB.

Sorry but why is it cheaper to park in the road?

I was going to ask the same?
I thought it was always cheaper to "park on driveway" or "garaged overnight" ??

Exactly this. I was in a similar position to you last year. The fleet management company (not my employer) wrote to me outlining all the incidents that I had (broken into, crashed into). I then went to Elephant and they classed this a my claims history. I still started at the bottom with 1 year as I had to claim for a break in.

Why park on the road? surely that'd be a higher risk?

Theifs are less likely to steal it as they don't know which house has the keys to it, plus people crash into stuff trying to park in driveways/garages and claim it on insurance. Both of these outweigh the risk of your car getting hit parked on the road, hence it's cheaper.

Adding a female does bring it down. I added my other half and it brought it down by nearly 200 quid even though she's been driving less than me.

Exactly right.

You'll be surprised at the size of discount you can get with adding your other half, too.

It might be best to actually insure the car for where it is actually kept at night. If you have it nicked from the Street and it's supposed to be in the garage (or your home doesn't actually have a garage) its not worth the hassle.

Have you spoken to the brokers/insurers of the weekend/track cars? They might be able to help.

I do not claim to understand 'Insurance Logic' but it's just the way it is.
I can hazard a guess though at:

You could scrape your car on the wall/obstacles onto driveway
Hitting garage walls etc
Burglers knowing which house a car belongs to, allowing them to steal keys (don't forget a lot/most cars stolen these days are with keys of some kind)
Criminal damage from people you have peeved off keying whatever car is in front of the house they know you live in.

Your OH probably won't make too much of a difference (though I doubt she'll increase the premium) - try a middle-aged or elderly, female relative with a long, fairly clean driving history. Your mother/aunt/grandmother are worth trying.
