Used to be quite a few cars with 5 cyl engines, can only think of the TTRS and RS3 with them now, the Focus ST is losing its 5 cyl this year for a four.

My favourite engine layout, I find a lot of sixes a bit too cultured, a five is more interesting than a four and generally sounds wonderful.

Are Volvo not using the 5 any more?

I didn't think they were ever as popular as 4 and 6 pots.

A six cylinder is more refined, a four more economic. Not many people want something in between.

At a guess, economy.

5 pots are generally not that economical or enviromentally sound. Anything where economy isn't a concern, the purchase price generally allow for a 6 cylinder effort

Love my Disco TD5. A 5 isn't as smooth as a Six (generally), and a 4 is more economical/CO2 friendly.

I think as has been said - bad fuel economy and aside from a glorious soundtrack no benefit over a turbo 4 cylinder really?

I have one stashed away under my bonnet, connected to a stainless exhaust system. It sounds lovely biggrin

Yep, I am still running one. Are Alfa still making the 2.4 JTD lump? Presumably not with the demise of the 159, Brera et. al.

Shame really because it is a great unit for a diesel!

Nope. Gone. 2.0 only now.

Volvo will be fitting new 5-cyl engines to their soon-to-be-launched V40 (2.0 diesel, 2.4T petrol).

I've got one. Volvo 2.0l turbo diesel, 5 cylinder averaging 41.2mpg on a recent 1650mile road trip.

As already stated the Volvo 5-pot is well rounded, I did 44,000miles in my 2.4 ltr 5pot and it was one of the best engines I've had the pleasure of driving.

I had an 850 T5 which I loved, can't beat the noise of a 5cyl at full chat. Even nicer was the noise of my pops' n/a 2.5 10v 850 when you kicked it's head in.

My brother currently has a V5 Bora which sounds nice too.

Shame most manufacturers are phasing them out frown

What is the point of 5 cylinders? (Or 10 for that matter).
Never could see why, odd firing arrangement and surely more imbalanced than 3 or 4 and there multiples.
Do sound good though, Stilo 5 pot with a noisy ish exhaust had me looking round for the supercar.
