From my personal experience and lots of homework done...
If the transfer box is leaking at all or making slight noises then it's going to cost money.
The centre bearing in the propshaft requires a new propshaft.
Specialist price for the whole lot including labour is around £1500.
I've had mine done and all the rumbles and vibration have gone along with the leak!
In addition the auto is not a nice box. I usually have autos but having read so many reports of it being a sluggish changing frustrating and unreliable unit I went manual, which is a great box. The engine is torquey enough to be able to drive quite lazily.
Given all the above have a good test drive before you buy. I love my 3.0se and find it a reliable, comfy and generally pretty cheap to run car (all service items are same part numbers as Mondeo). Fuel ecnonomy on the auto will be worse so expect 20ish in town and low-mid 30s on a run.
Oh and finally, check under the plastic sill covers, they can turn into collanders without people noticing

That's a private plate '04' given the car was registered in 2005. I agree with diff box, mine went at 48k you will need over 1k to fix it, bushes are a regular failure my car is having new rear bushes fitted as I type this 06(55000 miles), nice cars but due to the current market trend for small diesels, running costs of petrol,large engines, insurance and road tax, petrol X Types are fetching no money on the 2nd hand market. I have the manual, nice box, have tried a few auto's didn't like them.
