I have a Garratt turbo on my MX5. Recently on Heavy acceleration there is a strange noise from the engine. Could it be the turbo on its way out, if not what else could it be? Also the boost only reaches 0.7 instead of 0.9.

You can hear it in this clip

Any suggestions?

I suppose that faint whooshing is the "strange noise" we are supposed to be hearing? It does sound like a boost leak, sometimes you can't hear them, other times they sound like Darth Vader is under the bonnet as the air wooshes out of the leaky hose.

A turbo on the way out is a sound I've heard described as "a distant siren", presumably as the bearing wears and the compressor wheel begins to oscillate slowly on it's axis before failing completely.

You can hear the boost start and then a harsh sound, more clear after the gear change in the clip.

Take the inlet off the turbo and move the shaft for play there should be very little up/down play and no in and out.
