http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/pictureg...

I just had a quick browse through this shortlist, and OK, whilst a few of them are great shots, there are a good few more in there that really do nothing for me.

Are those really the best shots that all the pros with their pro equipment and pitchside access could manage over what, by my calculations, has been 684,000 minutes of football?

I've deliberately put this in photography rather than sport, btw, as I'm more interested in the photography side of the debate, although I accept that some of the shots may have some sort of specific football significance I'm unaware of.

Have to agree, of the 11 in the gallery there only the 2nd one (from behind the goal showing the keeper and floodlights) really interests me from a photography point of view (or any point of view for that matter wink).

yes

I did also quite like shot 10 with all the Liverpool players just as a probably unrepeatable angle, but other than that I was staggered that they couldn't come out with better.

Yep, number 2 has got it all. Others are all good but a little erm... meh.

As with a lot of photo competitions or galleries like this one, they aren't chosen by photographers. This means more emphasis is put on things other then their photographic merit (the shot of david buckram scoring "that" goal for example.

I think they've become confused with trying to include defining moments in the premiership rather than actually choosing a good photo. Agree that no. 2 was one of the more interesting ones.

That's part of the problem with sports photography though. Is it a good photo because of the moment it captured or is it good because it 'looks' good.

For me a good PL photo should capture something that the TV cameras won't. We've all seen Rooneys overhead kick a thousand times. The shot where Roy Keane and half of the united team are surrounding the referee was a great shot but I can't find it.

No Roy Keane, Klinsman, Shearer, DiCannio, Zola, Cantona, Ravanelli, Henri, McGrath, Wright, LeTis, Bergkamp, Jones, Juhninio (or however you spell him), Seaman, Ginola, van Nistelrooy and others?

They have all provided pivotal and/or memorable moments (good and bad).

meh.

As above - I think they are talking about the best record shots of the first 20 years of the Premier League. Not necessarily the most artistically excellent images. But I agree there are a few that don't even meet that criteria (eg. Ronaldo vs Reading )

Why is it that *most* of these 'best moments' in 20 years are from within the last 5 years? Seems to be feck all from the early 90's.
