I have noticed a very popular and dangerous trend with drivers under the age of 20 and they steer the car with the palm of their hand, something no real PHer would do I am sure.
Is it like baggy pants? something they have seen black gangsters do?
One of my close family is a driving instructor and she has to stop the young men attempting this habit.

Anything which makes you look less in control of the vehicle is "cool" apparently.

Seat reclined back as far as it will go for the gangsta lean, palm steering with one hand, cap on and hood up in the car to restrict peripheral vision, music up booming loud so they don't have to worry about traffic noise etc.

Typical to your stereo type, I am under 20 and do as you describe. At low speed.

I must be a fake PH'er. smile

Good for low speed manoeuvring, not much use other than that. (I speak as a 20 year old) People have far worse habits on the road though, at least it means there is ONE hand on the wheel!

I do this for low speed maneuvering i.e parking and the like, but i also drive forklifts quite a bit so i suppose it's born out or habit. Although when forklifting i do it with the left hand but use the right hand when using it for parking.

Can't see the problem myself.

I do it.

Do you do the 10 - 2 shuffle all the time when driving?

Nope, quarter to 3 for me, the steering wheel even has nice shaped bits there. 10 to 2 is just all lumpy and uncomfortable!

This is assuming I have both hands on the wheel of course, which is only usually in the twisties or when I can be bothered. Motorways and slow round town is less likely. (Yes I'm a terrible driver)

Feeding is still better though; the quickest, cleanest way to get your lock on and off.

Mind you, I am a stickler for good steering technique. I tend to use a 9-3 myself, but that is more a habit borne of the wheel position in my MR2 Turbo than a general preference of 9-3 over 10-2. I hate seeing sloppy steering technique, particularly with hands crossing over, steering everywhere with one hand etc etc. It screams "I'm lazy and I don't care about my driving" and true to form, the sloppy steerer's drive is usually cack.

I have no problem with palm-steering for low speed manoevring, especially in something with a slow steering rack. I've even used it once or twice over the years for applying large amounts of oposite lock when the other hand was busy operating other controls. hehe

Not the best technique for regular driving, but it does have its place.

I'm 51 and a half, and I do it whilst manoevering. What's wrong with that?

I dont see the problem with it at low speeds, especially when reversing and looking back

Had a lift in a car with a guy that drove like this about a month ago, that was a bad start, it was when he hit 80 down a London street with cars parked either side I said "listen mate, if you're gonna drive like a complete knob I'd rather walk".

fortunately he stopped driving like a weapons grade cockend at that point. Including turning the wheel with his palm. At eighty. Down a narrow street. In the wet.

Probably a result of people who have never known a vehicle without power steering. It sounds like a bunch of lazy arsed horsest to me.

I tend to use pull-push steering for most of my steering.
For some low speed manoeuvres I cross my arms because, well frankly, pull-push is a bit ridiculous.
For higher speed then it's mainly fixed-input at 9-3 on the wheel.
Works for me and, all except low speed manoeuvres, I've got full control.

Used to see all the kids doing it when I was at college many moons ago. I'll bet not many people on here use the proper method of passing the wheel through your hands either hehe

It has been thus since the dawn of power steering. Nothing new about it. Drivers do it because they can. Not the best preparation for a sudden sharp avoidance manoeuvre though.
