Hi,

IF anybody seen my last post about having an interview they will know I tend to get fairly nervous before hand but settle down during the event.

But I want o make this interview the best I possibly can and by researching the company and ensuring I have scenarios that I can provide examples of to back up my technical ability.

But the HR side of things tend to worry me a little in the way of some questions.

What are your weaknesses? now I don't want to say I dont have any because generally speaking everyone has a weakness... and at the same time I dont want to say yes.

So what do people think of this answer?

A weakness that I had to overcome before moving my career into the offshore sector was a fear of going under water (I know grown man and all that). In the months previous to making the decision I attended the pool reguarly to get myself comfortable with water so that upon doing the BOSIET I knew that I would be comfortable.

Dose this show that I have had a weakness and to overcome it I have worked at it?

And another question is:

IF there is one thing in your life you could change what would it be?

My answer:

When completeing my apprenticeship ansd HNC I decided to wait 2 years before starting on my HND, this was to allow me time without the interuption of college to gain experience in my trade but looking back I would have started my HND straight away so that I could have progressed further by now whilst also gaining experience in my trade.

This said, I think by having those two years gap it has made me a better technician.

Sorry for the long thread just really looking for peoples opinoins of these questions and answers.

Cheers
Stuart

1. No. If I were interviewing you I'd want evidence of reflection on an incident you were involved in in the work environment and how you used that and previous reflection to identify some behavioural trait that you identified needing development; impatience, lack of self awareness, lack of emotional intelligence, aggressiveness etc, are what I would be hoping to hear about. So it's more about behaviours than skills. You could introduce the skill one too if you have time and its appropriate.

2. Yes & No. Your example isn't a bad one, yet you go on to state it was a good move. I'd be looking again to see evidence of effective reflective practice; have you made a mistake in your life with regard to not doing the best for others and wish you could turn back the clock to be able to do the right thing? It's this level of self insight and honesty I would be looking for.

Hope that helps a little. Good luck!

rog007, thanks for such a comprehensive reply. My problem is that the examples you have given I don't actually have a real scenario that I have been involved in to reflect upon. I am 24 having only been a tradesman for 4 years.

Also I've heard a lot of rumours that employers although they want to hear about negative things you have learnt from at the same time can hold these against you, is there much truth in this or more myth?

Thanks
Stuart

rog007 - thining further about question No1 - how would a weakness such as having a lack of confidence when completeing my apprenticeship and starting out as a tradesman?

The work i produced was to standard but it took me a few months to adapt into being a tradesman.

Would this be something that would cover that kind of question?

Thanks
Stuart

It would. What an interviewer should be looking for with this type of question is whether you have the self awareness and
confidence to answer this honestly and with relevance. Good luck!

What offshore job is it?

I'd be more interested in what you could contribute. Knowing the kit is a massive step as its not things people outside the industry know about, so if you could demonstrate some understanding it would be good.

Are you running tree's? BOP's, drilling, wireline, workovers, hangers, etc.. Just research your role and show you are interested.

Rog007 - Thanks for that, I think I will be able to answer that question with confidence as I can explain how I resolved it and how it has made me a better technician that will never be over confident as i believe this to leave gaps for errors.

Regarding the position its a Mechanical Technician position, I am currently offshore in that position but would love to get back into the North Sea.

Cheers
