Hi Guys,

I have hatched a plan, since I have some free time and I want to get away somewhere (to get away from this rain in the UK!!!) of driving a mates spare car to Italy where he moved over to at the start of the year for work for him. The plan is he is going to drop the car off on Sunday on the way to the ariport, and I will drive over next week. I have done the down through the east side of France to Annacy, Pt St Bernard, route before. And also have done down through Germany, the east side of Switzerland, though the Davos area, and over to Italy via Passo del Bernina.

The route will be limited in the Alps to what passes are open, and it may be that I have to use one of the tunnels if none are... So what do you guys suggest of a route to go, that has some interesting places to stop off, taking it easy? The car is an MX-5 (a 1.8 first generation, but actually a Miata, since it is a left hooker that he bought in the US, when working there years ago), which don't really do fast motorway speeds, so I want to limit any motorway driving getting through boring parts of Europe.

Personally, I would drive to Reims and have a look at the old GP circuit, then Chalons-en-Champagne, then Nancy.

Near Nancy turn south through stunning Alsace to Mulhouse for a look at the Schlumpf collection, before crossing into Switzerland.

Head to Interlaken and do the following passes: -
Grimselpass
Furkapass
San Gottardo pass

Into Italy to Milan, and then Modena.

Cheers QS, I am liking some of your ideas! Although I have passed through Reims, I was in too much of a rush (at the end of a big bike trip, tired and sore, on a hot day, we just wanted to get back..) to seek out the GP curcuit, so that is a good idead to stop at. I have stayed in Alsace before and it is lovely. A mate on PH knows some good routes aroudn that area too. There are some fortification from the Maginot Line in the area I have wanted to check out one day, which I could see.

The Switzerland route souds good - I haven't gone through that area before (I have done most of the passes on bikes and cars over the years), so a new area to expolore soudns good.

I might be going back in July with the OH for the MotoGP in Tuscany on the bikes, so this route sounds good to do a dry run for it.

QS - send you a PM.
G Man - it was you I was referring to in my post, and I was going to give you a call during the weekend! Are you thinking of another Eurobike trip (hint hint) - everyone else has got lame excuses for not doing them this year (money/work/kids/wife's etc...)

Yes 2 trips, Deutsche Alpenstrasse, Austria and Dolamites including Hitler Eagles nest
The 2nd is either an on/off road Pyrennes trip or roll down to the Mountains in morrocco
