I've just moved from a tuned Lotus S2 Exige to a 2002 911 having had to re-locate to the US for my job.

Read through the usual forums, BS and power claims out there:
- K&N 57 Induction +20bhp but knacks the MAF sensor with oil/water when wet, approx 200 quid
- ECU remap via OBDII port +20bhp and mid-range torque, approx 600 quid.
- Sports Cat 200 cell + exhaust 15bhp, approx 1500

Has anyone had a 996 3.6 320ps engine tuned with measurable gains from any of the above? (E.g. dyno before and after)

I'm aware you can get bolt on turbos & superchargers but don't particularly want to go there having done that with the Lotus and spent thousands. The 911 was available to me at a price I couldn't refuse which is why I didn't buy a turbo. Just checking whether there are any small modifications that will be worth the cash.

Good luck on here mate. All they talk about is depreciation and how much money specialists are making. (well not everyone but the usual suspects). Someone with a life may be along to help you out and i hope they do. All the best.

Hi Stevey, the exhaust and induction kit will really improve the car; not so much from a performance perspective but the sound will make a massive improvement to the enjoyment factor. After this I would also recommend a SSK (Short Shift Kit) which can be purchased for about £70. With a BMC panel filter (£70) you will not have the MAF contam issue, alternatively soak up the residual oil in the K&N filter by wrapping in paper towel and leaving over night. CAI (Cold Air Induction kit) around £90 also works well for induction. Potential power increase with the above plus a re-map will be around 20BHP. You are never going to make any real power gains with a N/A Porker. Enjoy the car for what it is or buy a TT if straight-line power is your aim!

I wouldnt get too exicted about the tuning potential of the 3.6 996. The X51 kit from Porsche has tuned heads, cams, inlet, exhaust and map, costs £8.5K and liberates a mighty 25bhp. I am lucky enough to have this option on my C4S but to be honest the difference is negligable compared to a stock engine. will probably be most handy come re-sale timesmile

Exhausts are always good, the better sound enhances and informs the experience.
Beyond that you should look at mods to enhance what's there. Suspension, wheels (depending on what you have), brakes, geo, weight loss etc.
A well thought out and put together car can be sublime to drive.

Trying to get more power is not only mostly pointless but somewhat misses the point of the car.

Though I posted elsewhere yesterday, this forum seems more relevant to my experience.

I have owned my 03 996 C4S for four years.
I bought it in late 2010, with 6K miles on a new engine, (the big bearing (IMSB), Porsche installed under warranty, by the previous owner.
It is immaculate still, Silver on Metropol blue interior, fully optioned. I paid $ 35K US.
I have tracked it consistently, now over 50 days with PCA Driver's Ed events, and it is a pure joy. At times, I fall victim to the online scare tactics of the dreaded IMSB nightmares, but with the last of the Porsche M96 engines, the failure rates are quite low.
I have modified the car quite a bit, and it is sharp, comfortable and sounds wonderful. Hopefully, the deeper oil sump and water pump will help the IMS issue.
Of course the front wheel drive makes the car heavier, (Sumo wrestler in my boot!), but the car is certainly fast on rainy track days.

On track, I roll on Michelin Sport Cup tires, or Hoosiers, with PS2 my wet/daily drive choice. It now has about 38K miles, and runs flawlessly.
Needles to say, I replace the 'wear items', pads, discs and tires all too frequently, as tracking requires.
Oil changes every 4 track days, or about 3K miles.

Proactively, the Flat Six IMS Guardian system was installed.
The mods are as follows:

1) IMS Bearing is the LATEST, large version, as in the Gen 1, 997.
2) RMS SEAL was changed with a new clutch.
3) Water pump changed.
4) Brake fluid flushed and replaced with BLUE annually.
5) Stainless steel brake lines
6) H&R lowering springs
7) IPD intake Plenum
8) K&N cold air filter
9) X collector exhaust - 200 cell catalytic converter
10) EVOMS ECU optimization - 'Flash'
11) LN Engineering 1 Qt. Deep oil sump kit and X51 Oil Baffle
12) Pagid race brake pads
13) B&N Short Shifter Lever
14) New VICTOR ZEHN aluminum wheels.
15) Genuine Porsche GT3 race seat ( matching Metropol Blue Recaro).
16) Tarett Engineering Sway Bars and Drop Links
17) Bilstein B8 Sport shocks (designed for shorter springs)

I suspect that the intake/exhaust mods are worth some HP gain, ( 35?) but the EVOMS remap was very dramatic. Much better throttle response, more linear torque, and power delivery.
I 'might' get a 997C2S, though I much prefer the pure, elegant look of the 996 C4S, Pinky Lai's ultimate 996 statement. I find the 997 lumpy and retro, though I'm sure this comment could unleash a diatribe by some of you.

  • bump* - looking at a potential 996 3.4 purchase to use on track/mod car
Havent found much on power increases on the m96 engines other then MH tuning 400hp 3.8 big bore.
Anyone have experience in tuning these things with keeping it N/A?

You need to either add X51 components or increase capacity to get any real tangible gains - Look to Hartech for the latter
