Help!

Going wireless broadband at home and would like to keep a desktop PC to connect to my sound system and store my music files. I would then want to use a laptop to control applications on the desktop PC and provide Internet access. As a non-techy I feel this is possible but have no clue how to do it.

Has anyone done this at home? Can a non-technical person do it?

Simplest way would be to run a VNC server on the desktop, and connect from the Client.

You would actually be running on the desktop, but throwing a display out to the client.

20 seconds to setup.

stick "realvnc" into google and download.

There are far more elegant solutions, but I suspect you don't much care.

Run XP Pro on the desktop.

Then download Terminal Services Client from the MS website.

Put in the IP address of the desktop hit connect and you should see the desktop of the XP Pro machine on the laptop...

I prefer VNC. It's open source and multi client.

(currently using my KDE/Solaris machine from the laptop running 2000pro)

Yeah true, I'm a cuddly interface MS man myself.

Both ways work...

i use vnc and it works great on the mac too.
the perfect solution is to get a small windows based palm device and use that as the multi function remote control
with full wireless access to everything

Or, my P900 running as an IR remote control, and a VNC session to my main machine.....
