All,

My passport will expire in August. I'm not planning on going abroad this year so am not particularly bothered about renewing it at the moment. Does it make any difference the renewal process if I leave it until next year to renew? All I can see on the directgov website is info for either renewing before expiry, or applying for your first adult passport.

Thanks

No, it won't matter a bit. I renewed mine this last year and it had run out in 2008, just apply for a renewal and send it off when you're ready!!
Great, thanks.

I've just sent off the renewal for my wife's passport that expired in 2008, they've cashed the cheque so I assume all is OK with it. All we did was fill in the online form, they sent it to her and she signed it and sent it off with the old passport and two photos, you don't even need a countersignatory for them.

Same as me, although they push for you to get it checked at the Post Office (for a charge!!) I didn't bother and had it back within a couple of weeks!!
If you fill the original application out online then 90% is already filled in so not much point. I did take mine to the post office and they tried to get me to pay £5 odd for special delivery saying it would guarantee it getting there, does this mean they go out of their way to lose everything else?
