Almost every Friday when I am driving back from Leeds around late morning I see a convoy coming north bound on the M1.

It compromises of 2 large dark blue vans with amber flashing lights in the grills in the 3rd lane with 1 police car infront, 1 at the side in lane 2, and 1 behind in lane 3 again all with blues and twos going. Although it's hard to tell what speed they are doing from the other carriageway the seem to be shifting.

Any ideas??

To add they don't appear to be prisoner transport vans.

They are returning the grim that had leaked out over the previous week. In the south we collect stray grim and send it back to you every friday.

Once the Grim has been redistributed, it doesn't return empty, it is filled with Shandy and sent back.

would i be right in thinking that all the police cars in these convoys have armed officers?
i also think there is normally 1 or 2 unmarked cars in close proximity as the convoy makes its journey, aswell as air support, i think.

Next time you see one, pull a hand brake turn infront of them then try to get them to stop....you'll find out then.

Not the answer, but at about 0630 each morning a couple of trains (traction engines) come through my local station towing a single small container. I think this is nuclear waste but no one seems to know.

If it looks like the ones on this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_flask then the internet suggests it might be.
