It's not too well..

OK folks ,
Your diagnosis of the problem please :
On the way home from work the chim started to make a 'rattley fairly high-pitched squeal' - as if something was scraping it quietened when revved harder implying a possible broken mount causing crank pulley to rub on the chassis or water pump bearing. I was most of the way home so finished journey rather than be stranded.
No starter life at all - OK maybe a return of the standard heat problem as no noticeable dip with high beam when key turned.
Well 3 hours later still no starter. Another 1.5hrs and hear the siren going - quick investigation and the siren's operating intermittent as the car battery's gone flat.
My deduction is the starter for some reason partially engaged with the engine running hence the noise and remained stuck causing the later flat battery.

Check the alarm system/immobiliser. screeming sounds like a duff siren.
siren's going because the battery is flat I would suspect the starter in the first instance too, but check that there is power to it before you go to the hassle of removing it
also chack the 100a fuseThanks for the feedback.
Here's an update - Battery was indeed totally flat.
The fried starter (patent replacement) c/w burnt smell - removed and solenoid is open circuit.
The gear is a bit chewed and rounded on the front edge along with some minor damage to the ring gear on the flywheel.
Installed original starter and put some charge in the battery and she fired up with initially a bit of a screech - Hopefully just removing minor burrs and the old starter freeing up.
What does seem strnge now is there appears to be a few relay clicks going on whilst engine running - maybe I just don't hear them normally as the battery etc is currently still out on passenger floor.
So it would appear that for some reason the starter was trying to run whilst engine already going and the screech was gear on ringgear.
I'll now leave it until tomorrow night and see if still fires OK.
